City Council candidates respond to South Lake Tahoe Chamber questions

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce Board recently asked the nine City Council candidates ten questions they felt were of most importance to its members. The questions focused mainly on topics relating to things that will or may affect both the local small businesses and the community in general.

Their board made the decision to not endorse a specific candidate this election, but instead rank them based on how much they align with the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce goals based on their answers to the questions below.

George passed away peacefully in his home in the presence of family on August 5, 2020.

George was born in New York City, NY. He attended Brooklyn Technical
High School, Notre Dame University, and Carnegie Mellon University, where he
met his wife, Elaine, and acquired his MBA. He and his wife were married for 57
years. In 1995 they moved to Lake Tahoe where George and his wife have been
real estate brokers for the more than 25 years. Nonetheless, his first and foremost
concern was always his family.

August 19, 1973 - May 18, 2020 - Sloan Michael Gordon signed off on a life lived to its very fullest on May 18, 2020. Though taken far too soon, Sloan managed to live 10 lives in the span of his 47 years, punctuated by adventure, mischief, and quality time with his family and friends.

Tahoe Chamber Town Hall on the economic impact of COVID-19

Governor outlines guidelines for reopening Nevada with phase one Saturday

Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak has unveiled his plan for the state to reopen under phase one starting May 9, 2020. Outdoor malls, restaurants, hair salons, and barber shops are among those able to reopen with new standards for safety.

"We must stay safe so we can stay open," said Sisolak of the ability to move into phase 2 by the end of May, or sooner.

"The beginning of the reopening of our economy is not the end of the coronavirus," said Sisolak during a press conference Thursday afternoon. "It's still with us, as strong as ever. It will not go away until there's a vaccine."

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

City of South Lake Tahoe seeks community members for its transformational change committee

The City of South Lake Tahoe is currently accepting applications for community
members to join the newly formed transformational change sub-committee. This committee is focused on developing second and third economies for Tahoe in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis.

The committee is proposing to bring together a diverse and innovative group of community stakeholders, thought leaders, and experts to implement policies, programs, and projects today that will have long term beneficial impacts for South Lake Tahoe over the next 50 years.

Special South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting Wednesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - City Council has two items on their special meeting agenda for Wednesday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m. The meeting is live-streamed on Channel 21 and on the City’s website at www.cityofslt.us.

There will be no formal action on the first item. They will be discussing their newly appointed Transformational Change Committee which is comprised of Councilmembers Cody Bass and Devin Middlebrook.

The Crossing in South Lake Tahoe sold for $14.8M

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Crossing at Tahoe Valley has been sold by the Sutter Capital Group, the Sacramento-based investment company that bought the struggling factory store property at the Y just over five years ago.

Caesars Entertainment announces sale of Harrah's Reno

Harrah's Reno will soon be coming to an end. The gaming establishment that had its humble beginning as a bingo parlor opened by Bill Harrah in 1937 has been sold to a company that will turn it into a non-gaming mixed-use center.

On Thursday, Caesars Entertainment Corporation and VICI Properties Inc. announced in a press release they signed an agreement to sell Harrah’s Reno Hotel and Casino to an affiliate of CAI Investments for $50 million.

South Lake Tahoe City Council votes to defend Measure T

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Vacation Home Rentals (VHR) in South Lake Tahoe continue to be the hot topic, even months after a measure to ban most of them in the city limits narrowly passed in the November 2018 election. Voters approved Measure T by 58 votes.

The subject has created a big divide in the community and a decision by the South Lake Tahoe City Council Tuesday will not lessen that division though their intent is now clear.

Conservancy considers selling Asset Lands for implementation of Meyers Area Plan

During their meeting this week, the California Tahoe Conservancy Board directed its staff to move ahead with due diligence for their nine asset lands in Meyers. Of the Conservancy’s nearly 4,700 properties in the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Conservancy has designated 17 properties as asset lands that could support sustainable compact development consistent with local area plans and the Lake Tahoe Regional Plan.

City of South Lake Tahoe looks at selling property for workforce housing needs

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe has several undeveloped lots and has taken steps to sell them with the proceeds going into a fund that has been earmarked for workforce housing projects.

During their meeting Tuesday, City Council directed City Manager Frank Rush and staff to take steps to market and sell City-owned parcels at 3483 Ralph Drive and 2180 Washington Avenue. Neither spot would work for affordable multi-unit housing and are better suited for single-family residential homes.

Conservancy to consider selling some "Asset Lands" for implementation of Meyers Area Plan

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Most have seen the blue and gold placards attached to trees on lots around Lake Tahoe, signifying the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) owns that piece of property.

CTC currently owns nearly 4,700 of these labeled parcels comprising around 6,500 acres around Lake Tahoe. Over 4,300 of these parcels are environmentally sensitive, leaving 331 parcels as "asset lands."

Cold case task force continues to investigate Joseph Holt; Asks for public's help

The El Dorado County Cold Case Task Force continues their investigation into Joseph Holt to see if he is responsible for other unsolved crimes. They are asking for the public's help in identifying any crimes they may have witnessed or been victims of that may be associated with Joseph Holt.

South Lake Tahoe City Council to discuss possible change to Charter City

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - When the City formed in 1965 it was incorporated as a general law city for the purpose of having more local control over public services such as police, fire, and snow removal.

Now there is discussion about changing to a charter city. During their March 5 meeting, Councilmember Cody Bass asked that this subject come forward at a future meeting and Councilmembers Jason Collin and Devin Middlebrook said they were interested in learning more about what the differences are between the two, and what it would mean to South Lake Tahoe to switch.

LTCC leases South Lake Tahoe property for student housing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is taking a first, big step toward helping address the lack of affordable student housing in the community by leasing a five-unit apartment building near Ski Run Blvd.

The college's trustees gave authority to school administration to sign a five-year lease with the owner of that apartment building during their meeting Tuesday evenings. The lease starts on July 2, 2019.

El Dorado County hires David Livingston as new County Counsel

After holding the position on an interim basis since February, David Livingston was appointed by the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors today to the position of County Counsel.

“I’m honored to have the trust of the Board of Supervisors to hold the position of County Counsel,” said Livingston. “I look forward to continuing my career with El Dorado County and providing legal advice to the Board on the myriad legal issues that come before it.”

Two South Lake Tahoe cold cases solved with genetic genealogy

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Two decades old murders in the South Lake Tahoe area have been solved using genetic genealogy, identifying a deceased local man as the murderer of two women.

During a El Dorado Cold Case Task Force press conference in Placerville Monday, District Attorney Vern Pierson said Joseph Stephen Holt of South Lake Tahoe and San Jose was responsible for killing Brynn Rainey in 1977 and Carol Ann Andersen in 1979.

Looking at the economic news is enough to give you pause with rising interest rates, stock market volatility and real estate experiencing declining sales numbers and the reduction of appreciation. Our market (Lake Tahoe) will see a small negative impact from interest rates as they affect affordability but the last item, equity growth, will impact our market the greatest. The public is staying in their homes for a longer period historically and supported through the increase in remodeling, appliance and flooring sales.

Douglas County to hold public meetings on proposed VHR ordinance changes

There will be a series of five public meetings in Douglas County to discuss proposed code amendment changes to their Vacation Home Rental Ordinance. In the old code, vacation home rentals (VHRs) were only allowed in the Tahoe Township (lake portion of the county), but the proposed changes will include VHRs in all areas.

Other proposed changes in the ordinance include:

All VHRs must have a contact person in Douglas County and the property manager must be licensed by the State of Nevada Division of Real Estate.
Unpermitted homes will be fined $500 per day up to $10,000.

Tahoe Pourhouse prepares to open in South Lake Tahoe

Another stop on the South Lake Tahoe epicurean trail is slated to open this week, and for those looking for something new in the world of wine and tasty bites, its not a moment too soon.

The Tahoe Pourhouse is located in the Crossing at Tahoe Valley, currently home to two other popular eateries, Lake Tahoe Alexworx and Verde. They will share the outdoor plaza with the new brewery.

Carl Ichan sells Tropicana Entertainment for $1.85 billion

The parent company of MontBleu Casino Resort on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe has been sold to Eldorado Resorts Inc. and real-estate company Gaming and Leisure Properties Inc. for $1.85 billion.

Carl Ichan and his Tropicana Entertainment reached the definitive agreement to sell Tropicana’s real estate to Gaming and Leisure Properties, Inc. and to merge its gaming and hotel operations into Eldorado Resorts, Inc.

Open house for prospective board members at Lake Tahoe Humane Society

The Landing in South Lake Tahoe sold to Maryland based hospitality company

The Landing in South Lake Tahoe has been sold to DiamondRock Hospitality Company, a real estate investment trust that owns 28 other premium hotels and resorts gateway cities and destination resorts throughout North America and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This purchase now gives DiamondRock four resorts in California including the Hotel Rex in San Francisco and the Westin San Diego. The Landing will be added to their portfolio which also includes L'Auberge de Sedona in Arizona, Vail Marriott Mountain Resort & Spa and several other Marriott and Westin properties.

New Mexican Bistro opens in Meyers

El Fresco Mexican Bistro has brought a new flavor to the heart of Meyers.

No moratorium on vacation rentals in El Dorado County

Tuesday's El Dorado County Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting was just as all other meetings about vacation home rentals have been: A full house and a large contingent passionately representing both sides of the issue.

Supervisor Shiva Frentzen sought conceptual approval of an urgency ordinance to place a moratorium on the issuance of new vacation home rental (VHR) permits in the unincorporated portions of the County located in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Squaw Valley creates nonprofit to mange and distribute millions

Squaw Valley has created a nonprofit that will manage and distribute millions of dollars generated from the voluntary project transfer fee related to the approved redevelopment of The Village at Squaw Valley.

Named the Squaw Valley Foundation, a seven member board of directors will soon be selected and it's members will be a mix of local residents and business owners, second homeowners and a public service district appointee.
