WNC students send research balloon 17 miles into sky

While most students across the country have been learning online this fall because of the coronavirus, a group of students at Western Nevada College (WNC) took advantage of an exciting hands-on scientific learning opportunity earlier this month.

Students and science professors gathered at Jack C. Davis Observatory’s parking lot early in the morning and sent a helium-filled balloon nearly 17 miles into the stratosphere to record high-altitude data, then retrieved the balloon’s payload, which included instruments and sensors, in a cow pasture a few towns away in Minden.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Long after the fire trucks have come and gone, the threat to a community impacted by wildfire remains. It’s a less obvious threat than a towering inferno destroying homes and ripping through forests and hillsides. It is a hidden threat that arrives with winter rains and California Conservation Corps Corpsmembers are helping communities stay safe from it—toxic runoff, including those from the South Lake Tahoe center.

53 South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits recipients of American Century Championship donation

Local nonprofits in the South Lake Tahoe area were presented with a record $250,000 in donations from the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and American Century Championship as a result of money raised during the 2020 celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

Just as the popular golf event was unique and held without fans due to COVID-19 this year, it was a different type of ceremony handing out the money and the presentation of checks held virtually. Representatives from 53 nonprofits awarded the money were on the Thursday Zoom call.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe awards 19 scholarships

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe (SISLT) awarded scholarships to a group of local students from South Tahoe High, George Whittell High, the Lake Tahoe Basin Fire Academy and Lake Tahoe Community College. The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.

South Tahoe High School grad Tyler Pevenage awarded firefighter's scholarship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Tyler Pevenage, a recent graduate of South Tahoe High School, was awarded the “Michael Hoffman Memorial Scholarship” in the amount of $1,000.

This award is sponsored by the California State Firefighters’ Association Northern Division and open to family members of firefighters.

Tyler’s outstanding academic achievement, involvement in high school sports, leadership, and volunteer work in the community earned her this scholarship that is renewable yearly up to $4,000.

This week at South Tahoe High School, seniors visited the Scholarship Fair, a new school app was launched, and senior basketballers play their last home game.

Thursday afternoon, seniors were released early from classes to experience the inaugural Scholarship Fair, an event held by the STHS counselors. Organizations like South Tahoe High School Alumni Association, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Sierra, and El Dorado Community Foundation attended to educate the seniors on how they can earn scholarship money.

Local teen scholar invited to Delegation for Diplomacy in South Africa

Local teen and Lake Tahoe Community College student Laney Terrell has been invited by the International Scholar Laureate Program to join a delegation on International Relations & Diplomacy that will be traveling to South Africa in spring 2020.

"I am so excited for this opportunity to see how other democracies work and represent my Hometown," Terrell said.

$100K from 30th annual American Century Championship awarded to local nonprofits

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Thursday was money giveaway day at the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority (LTVA) meeting at Stateline. Thirty-eight local nonprofits were given checks totaling $100,000, a result of funds raised during the 30th annual American Century Championship at Edgewood.

Tahoe Douglas Fire raises funds to award scholarship to Douglas High student

ROUND HILL, Nev. - Every Labor Day, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) holds a pancake breakfast to support local students in their quest for higher education, and in particular in the field of public service.

They serve Douglas County at Lake Tahoe from the top of Kingsbury Grade to the top of Spooner Summit. This year they chose to invest in the Douglas High School graduating class of 2019 and awarded Alexa Moss with their annual scholarship.

Many of their employees and retirees reside in the valley and have raised their families there.

Edgewood Tahoe gives $60,000 to South Lake Tahoe nonprofits

STATELINE, Nev. - During the 2019 American Century Golf Championship, Edgewood Tahoe teamed up with three South Lake Tahoe are nonprofits teamed in providing food to the over 60,000 attendees to the tournament. The three groups volunteered their time in staffing food tents for the popular July 9-14 event, and, as a thank you, Edgewood Tahoe presented each with a $20,000 check.

On August 27, 2019, Edgewood honored Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, Lake Tahoe Community College, and Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas in an intimate ceremony where the groups received their checks.

There was an attendance record of 60,550, an economic impact estimated at $30 million for the Lake Tahoe Basin, and now an additional $100,000 will be given away to South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Township non-profits.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe Foundation held their annual Rewards for Excellance Scholarship program on May 22 at Harvey's Convention Center, awarding local high school and Lake Tahoe Community College students with scholarships.

Student honorees and their guests enjoyed lunch while 20 scholarships totaling $18,500 were presented by members Julie Gudaitis, Velma Schnoll, Louisa Boone and Carolyn MacRae.

SNC scholarship set up in teacher's name for locals pursuing teaching degrees

A new education endowment has been established at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village in memory of the late John Nemes, a teacher in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District for over 30 years.

This is the college's first teacher education endowment and will provide scholarships to support future teachers and honors the beloved Tahoe teacher who died on October 2, 2016.

Nemes passed on to his students a love of reading that came straight from his heart. John also loved gardening, his dog Buddy, Fallen Leaf Lake, a great glass of wine, and a good laugh.

Edgewood gives local volunteer groups over $55,000

South Shore students are the beneficiaries of funds raised during the American Century Championship (ACC) in Lake Tahoe this July. Edgewood Tahoe partnered with three local non-profits who operated concessions during the tournament in exchange for donations to be used for education.

Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation, Lake Tahoe Educational Foundation, and Tahoe-Douglas Rotary Club each volunteered at least 400 hours at the food tents, and in exchange for their efforts they split $55,230, giving each group $18,410.

Promise scholaships open for Nevada high school seniors attending WNC

The Nevada Promise Scholarship began accepting applications for its second-year on Wednesday, which allows students to attend Nevada community colleges at virtually no cost.

Last year saw more than 1,300 students become eligible to receive the scholarship and attend the College of Southern Nevada, Great Basin College, Truckee Meadows Community College, or Western Nevada College this fall semester nearly for free.

Barton Auxiliary gives $16,000 in scholarships to local students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Eight graduating students from across the South Shore and Carson Valley were awarded a combined $16,000 in scholarships from the Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. $126,000 in scholarships being awarded to 81 LTCC students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College is excited to present its annual scholarship awards to 81 deserving students at a special luncheon taking place on Friday, June 29 – the same day as the college’s graduation ceremony. STHS grad Rose Campion leaves USC on a high note as 2018 Valedictorian

A South Lake Tahoe graduate is heading to the podium at the University of Southern California (USC) on Friday, draped with honors cords, award medallions and a pin that will signify her as the 2018 Class Valedictorian.

Rose Campion, 22, will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and a Bachelor of Arts in History. The double major will leave her USC career behind with a 3.98 GPA.

In a school of 18,000 students and around 5,000 other soon-to-be graduates, it would seem almost impossible for a young woman from South Lake Tahoe to end up in the top spot on graduation day.

Jean was born on May 31, 1945 in Longview, Texas, to Viola and Frank Gurney. She spent her formative years in Massachusetts with her parents and sister Ann, and graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School in 1963.

Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers take top honors at competition

The Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers cam home from the Central Valley Law Enforcement Explorer Competition with 15 trophies, including the top award, 1st place overall, out-preforming the Hanford Police Department who have been the long standing first place holders.

There were 19 events at the competition which was held in Tulare, California April 6-7, 2018. The Douglas County team was up against 12 posts from the Central Valley area.

Minden Soaring Club awards $5K in scholarships to area students

Five students from the area were awarded scholarships by the Minden Soaring Club (MSC) to help finance flight and ground instruction in preparation for obtaining a private or other glider rating.

Five scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were awarded to youths who demonstrated they are interested in learning to fly gliders and/or who have already begun their training and need additional monetary assistance. The scholarships were announced by the MSC Board of Trustees at the club’s annual general meeting on March 18, 2018.
