Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/18/2020 - 4:12pmDel Laine has left her mark on South Lake Tahoe in ways that many local residents might not know. She was a mover and shaker, whose focus was on making the city a better place. Her most important role, though, was promoting the well-being of women.
This pioneer died Dec. 18, 2020, at home from natural causes, with family at her side. She was 90.
She was born Dolores Mae Wright on March 20, 1930, in Oakland, Calif., to Mabel Paulson and Leslie Wright.
USFS acquires 120 acres on Brockway Summit to protect from development
Submitted by paula on Fri, 12/11/2020 - 12:35pmLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Much sought-after parcels of land near Northstar Ski Resort have been purchased by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). The purchase brings to a close proposed developments which over the years have included 112 ridgeline homes and the Brockway Campground, a sprawling resort with 550 campsites and commercial and additional commercial facilities.
LTBMU used funds from the Santini-Burton Act to purchase two parcels that total approximately 120.4 acres of Brockway Summit land on the rim of the Tahoe Basin.
Lake Tahoe ski resort commits to removing "squaw" from its name
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/25/2020 - 5:24pmOLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. - Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows announced Tuesday that it is making a commitment to change the name of the legendary California mountain destination and remove the word "squaw."
What the new name will be is unknown at this time and work to determine what it will be is beginning immediately. They will announce the new name after the winter season concludes in 2021.
Blaze shuts down US395 in both directions near Hallelujah Junction

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - There won't be fireworks shows around Lake Tahoe but there will be the 4th of July Truckee Tahoe Honor Flyover honoring our nation's independence and frontline healthcare workers. Warbirds will take to the sky, flying over Truckee and Lake Tahoe communities.
A contingent of historic plans will leave the Truckee airport at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday the 4th and fly counterclockwise around Lake Tahoe (schedule below), coming back into Truckee by 12:15 p.m. The planes will not be on display at any airport, just a great show in the air.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The annual Made in Tahoe festival held during the Memorial Day Weekend at Squaw Valley has moved their event to October, but, to highlight local craftspeople who would normally be there, a virtual weekend event has been created.
Times are hard, especially for the artisan and small business community so organizers have brought together 50 local artisans, businesses, chefs, organizations, and entertainers featuring a wide array of offerings that are made in or inspired by the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee areas.

Each year, the LTBC honors those that have made significant advancements to promoting safer bicycling and walking opportunities for the Lake Tahoe-Truckee area.
This year, LTBC received 13 nominations and has announced the following Bike Achievement Awardees:

"We believe this is in the best interest of our guests, employees, & local community," said Squaw Valley in a release.
Sugar Bowl has suspended operations until further notice due to the impacts of the coronavirus.
Other resorts will most likely be making similar announcements.

Free Olympic Heritage Trail Day at Sugar Pine Park

TAHOMA, Calif. - You don't have to be an Olympian to explore the self-guided trails of the Olympic Heritage trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park. Sierra State Parks Foundation, the local nonprofit park partner, is hosting a free park day in honor of the 60th anniversary of the 1960 Winter Olympics, which took place in Squaw Valley and the West Shore of Lake Tahoe.
This is a great opportunity to explore the Olympic Heritage trails and interpretive displays while learning about the cultural and natural history of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Azul Latin Kitchen raises $11,000 for Tahoe Arts Project

The fruits of their efforts were presented to TAP during their public Williams Duo concert on Januar 30.
Each year Azul Latin Kitchen selects a local nonprofit to be the recipient of their fundraising for the year. In 2017 it was Tahoe Youth and Family Services, last year Live Violence Free, then in 2019 TAP.

It has been 60 years since the 1960 Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley and Sugar Pine Point State Park at Lake Tahoe. To celebrate this anniversary, the Sierra State Parks Foundation is hosting a presentation on the event with author David Antonucci on February 15, 2020.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reports 12" of new snow, Sierra-at-Tahoe 14", Kirkwood 12" and Squaw Valley 16" in the last 24 hours. The West Slope experienced an afternoon and evening of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and fog. Lake Tahoe is forecast to receive some of that freezing fog on Sunday night.
Birthday celebration in South Lake Tahoe for 99-year-old Martin Hollay

On Friday, November 1, Hollay turns 99 and there will be a party in his honor in South Lake Tahoe.

Overnight lows and dry air allow for snowmaking operations to start around Lake Tahoe

Both cold temperatures and dry air combine to create ideal conditions for making snow.
Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort are all planning to take advantage of this week’s cool weather window to build a solid base for the upcoming winter season.
Two newest South Lake Tahoe police officers excel at academy
Submitted by paula on Tue, 09/17/2019 - 9:33pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City of South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) has two new members - Christopher Cable and Charles Roesch. Both men were sworn in during a ceremony Tuesday, September 17.
Before their swearing in, both Cable and Roesch graduated from the six-month long Napa Police Academy on Saturday. At graduation both were honored for their grades and skills and ended up as the top two in their class.
340 new bike racks installed around Lake Tahoe in past two years

Or have you needed bike repair while out on the routes? Over the past two years, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition has spearheaded the installation of 340 new bike racks that provide security for almost 700 bicycles.

Most traffic-interfering work will be limited from 6 a.m. Friday, August 30 through 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 3 for Labor Day weekend. Exceptions may be granted depending on the work and route.

On Monday, August 12, the popular restaurants in the Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe presented members of LTEF with a check.

Squaw Valley man arrested on child pornography charges

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit, with the assistance of the Truckee Police and Scottsdale Police Departments, arrested 71-year-old William Heacox on June 5.
Bay Area woman identified as Eagle Falls accident victim
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/02/2019 - 1:06amLAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 35-year-old woman from the San Francisco Bay Area has been identified as the person who was swept away in the quick-moving current of Eagle Falls near Emerald Bay on Friday.
Dina Stephanie Espinosa had been sitting in one of the pools of water near the waterfall when she slipped as she was reaching for a branch, got caught in the current and went over the waterfall, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).

STPUD to consider rate increase for adequate fire protection and pipe replacement
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/20/2019 - 8:21pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Customers of the South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) may be looking at an annual increase on their water and sewer bills of 5.0 to 8.5 percent to cover costs of replacing aging infrastructure and enhancing local fire protection.
During last week's budget workshop, STPUD staff showed the Board what a rate increase could provide to their customers:
- Replacement or rehabilitation of 725,354 feet of steel pipe, water mains, wells and tanks
- Extension of the life of assets
- Replacement of 100,000 feet of pipe used for fire protection
