Scientists have researched this classic debate over “nature” and “nurture” among black bears for decades, from Yosemite National Park in the Sierra to central Florida and the Adirondacks in upstate New York.
Carson City IHOP shooting victims, survivors remembered
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/06/2015 - 10:05amDozens of runners and walkers, including Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, took to the streets of the capital city early Sunday for a remembrance run to recognize the victims of the Sept. 6, 2011 shooting at the IHOP in Carson City.
Four years ago Sunday, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which the mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons suffered injuries.
FBI affidavit alleges man found hiding out in South Lake Tahoe confessed
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/04/2015 - 2:34pmA Sacramento County man accused of kidnapping a Vallejo woman in March allegedly confessed to the crime in a recorded jailhouse interview and said he did it alone, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court.
Matthew Muller, 38, of Orangevale, is charged with kidnapping physical therapist Denise Hoskins at the Vallejo home she shared with her boyfriend on March 23 and keeping her captive for two days before dropping her off near her mother's house in Huntington Beach.
Three killed on Highway 50 near Fresh Pond
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/31/2015 - 11:17pmThree people were killed late Sunday night on Highway 50 in El Dorado County when the vehicle they were in went off the roadway and hit a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash happened about 11:50 p.m. east of the town of Fresh Pond.
Four people were inside an SUV when the driver missed a curve and caused the vehicle to go about 100 feet down a steep embankment, officers said.

Titled “Lifestyle Sessions,” the videos are meant to highlight Dubai’s outdoor and extreme sporting activities.
XDubai is the group behind videos of “Jetmen” Yves Rossy and Vince Reffet.
Anderson, who’s participated and won 12 medals, described Dubai as a “Disneyland for athletes.”
Two El Dorado County JV football players hospitalized after game
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/29/2015 - 9:00pmUnion Mine High School sophomores Nick Brown and Justin Schwartz had just finished leading their junior varsity football team to a 27-8 win over Foothill High School on Friday night when people noticed something wasn’t quite right.
Then Brown passed out, said El Dorado Union High School District Superintendent Stephen Wehr.
The two were rushed to the emergency care, Brown to Sutter Roseville Medical Center and Schwartz to Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center, according to Wehr.
Another bear killed by Nevada officials, this time on Kingsbury Grade

The bear was trapped overnight in the Kingsbury Area of Douglas County, and was put down because it was a danger to the public.
New Zealand team wins 520 mile race through the Sierras

Eleven teams with four members each spent the past several days running, biking, orienteering, mountain climbing, kayaking over 520 miles of some of the world's most beautiful terrain.
Reno funds Motel-to-Home program
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/28/2015 - 10:27pmThere are more than 300 Reno families currently living in motels. It's a problem the City of Reno wants to deal with, so they're putting up the cash needed to help.
"One huge problem we see is the inability to save for a deposit,” said Hettie Ploeger, Resource Network Director at Catholic Charities. "Other issues might be substance abuse, mental health and also learning how to budget."
Those are problems the City of Reno wants to help people overcome. They've given a $100,000 to catholic charities for a program that gets people into stable housing.
Autopsy: Contra Costa sheriff's deputy drowned in Lake Tahoe

The preliminary autopsy report determined Carlos Francies, 30, of Sacramento, drowned on Aug. 13, according to the El Dorado coroner's office. A final report is weeks away, the department said.

El Dorado County schools chief apologizes for DUI
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/25/2015 - 9:41pmEl Dorado County Superintendent of Schools Jeremy Meyers was booked and released from El Dorado County Jail on Saturday, a condition of his sentencing for driving under the influence in June.
Meyers’ attorney, Paul Zappettini, said Meyers was cited June 9 for driving under the influence of alcohol. He appeared in court Aug. 10 and received a five-day alternative sentence, which was served as house arrest, Zappettini said. He also was fined and faces suspension of his driver’s license. As a condition of his sentence, Meyers also was required to be booked at the El Dorado County jail.

'Dangerous' black bear killed at Tahoe

The bear, a 9-year-old, 450-pound male, was captured Monday night or early Tuesday morning, tranquilized and subsequently euthanized with drugs, said Chris Healy, spokesman for the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
The bear was determined to be the same one that had been raiding trash, breaking into cars and knocking over fences in the area and was killed as a threat to public safety, Healy said.

“Tahoe: A Visual History” opened Saturday at the Nevada Museum of Art, featuring more than 400 objects by 175 painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers and sculptors. Arranged chronologically for the most part, it combines culturally and historically significant creations with contemporary works.

Three Sacramento area friends stop potential terrorist attack in Belgium

One serves in the Air Force, another recently served in Afghanistan in the National Guard, another is studying physical therapy in California - and all three Americans are being hailed as heroes for tackling and disarming a gunman they happened to encounter on a high-speed train between Amsterdam and Paris.

Carson City teen dies at Lake Tahoe in water-related accident
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/22/2015 - 7:57pmA Carson City teenager died Saturday after authorities were called to Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe for an accident on the water. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed the victim is a 15-year-old Carson High School student.
The teen’s name has not been released. A chaplain from Carson City has notified the parents, said Furlong. The teen died after he was taken to a Reno hospital after emergency crews were called to Sand Harbor at around noon Saturday. Washoe County authorities would not confirm if it was a possible drowning.

Gardnerville shooting leaves man with life threatening injuries

More details are now known about Tuesday night's shooting in Gardnerville. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) has learned that earlier in the evening, at 8:20 p.m., there was a fight at the Ann Way residence between four individuals. During that altercation, the person of interest in the shooting, 56-year-old John Stalcup, was a victim of a battery.
When Deputies arrived on scene, the suspect in the battery had fled the scene.
Historic Tahoe Trout Farm faced with off-site sign challenge

This business, located off of Lake Tahoe Blvd on Blue Lake Avenue, was the topic of the South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission's meeting on August 13.
In an effort to "Clean Up Highway 50," the City's sign ordinance is meant to get rid of the blight and unattractive signage that visitors and locals see each day they travel the main artery through town.
Lisa Maloff donates $141,000 for new South Lake Tahoe Police K9

Land purchased to prove thinning forests can increase water supply
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/16/2015 - 7:13pmMore than 10,000 acres of scenic meadows, forests and trout streams in the Sierra Nevada 10 miles west of Lake Tahoe have been preserved in a deal in which environmentalists hope to prove that thinning out overgrown forests can increase California's water supply.
The Northern Sierra Partnership, an environmental group based in Palo Alto and founded by longtime Silicon Valley leaders Jim and Becky Morgan, joined with the Nature Conservancy and the American River Conservancy to buy the land for $10.1 million from Simorg West Forests, a timber company based in Atlanta.

Carson City sheriff’s deputies responded to the report of a physical domestic disturbance between a male and female in the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City.

Walker Fire burns 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained

The Walker Fire has now burned 3,715 acres and is now 35% contained. It has been determined that the fire is human caused and is under investigation.
There are 484 firefighters working on the fire along with 4 helicopters, 2 Air tankers, 34 Engines, 10 Crews, 6 Water Tenders, and 4 Dozers.
235 structures remain threatened but none have burned so far.
How the selling of LTCC bonds show what the nation thinks of Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2015 - 7:57pmAfter the passing of the $55 million Lake Tahoe Community College General Bond, known as Measure F in November, the next step was to sell the bonds.
On August 6, 2015, $19 million of Series A bonds were sold at a much better rate than anyone expected. When the market opened at 7 a.m. PST, investors were ready to jump on these bonds and it only took two hours to sell them, and waiting in the wings were another $54.4 million in orders.
The biggest single investor was State Farm Insurance who bought about 25% of the bonds or, $4.7 million.
New STHS bleachers behind schedule but ready by first game

They are the contractors working on the new football stadium bleachers at South Tahoe High and they missed the August 8 deadline for completion of the project. Summer rains caused several delays but they are now back on track to have the project finished by August 21, a week before the school's first football game.
Yosemite campground shuts down after squirrels die of plague
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/14/2015 - 5:41pmOfficials at Yosemite National Park said Friday they will temporarily close a popular campsite after two squirrels died of plague in the area.
Tuolumne Meadows Campground will close from noon Monday through noon Friday so authorities can treat the area with a flea-killing insecticide. Campers had their reservations canceled at the 304-site campground so the insecticide can be sprayed into rodent "burrow holes," the California Department of Health said Friday.
Plague is carried by rodents and is spread by fleas, but transmission between people is rare.
Historic Sheriff Logan's Great Granddaughter to share his story at SLT Library

Ms. Boor is the great granddaughter of this historic sheriff and has unearthed the untold story of his 1906 murder. Dealing with rowdy miners, drunken gamblers, and even Wild West legends like Wyatt Earp was a routine part of the job for onetime Sheriff Logan.
This is a story steeped in local history (Logan Shoals and Creek are named for this historic sheriff), presented it in an entertaining and informative way. This in not to be missed.

Her award-winning book, "Write, If You Live to Get There" tells the true story of her ancestor’s westward migration from Vermont to Tahoe through a series of family letters spanning more than 120 years. Interesting, informative and open to all.

Herbicides may be used on invasive species in Tahoe Keys
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/11/2015 - 11:06pmThe underwater scenes could be straight out of "Creature of the Black Lagoon." Long feathery tendrils of green plants, growing at alarming rates in the Tahoe Keys and attracting fish not before known in the crystal blue waters of the lake.
The plant described here is better known as the Eurasian Watermilfoil. It is joined by another nuisance non-native plant, the curlyleaf pondweed, in creating problems in the waters of the Tahoe Keys.
Passenger dies in El Dorado County DUI crash; children unhurt
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/11/2015 - 9:18pmA passenger who died in a Sunday night vehicle crash has been identified by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office as 33-year-old Rachelle Piparo of Georgetown.
Piparo was riding in the front seat of a pickup and was killed when driver Joseph Piparo, 33, rolled the vehicle and flatbed trailer it was towing east of Georgetown.
Joseph Piparo, of Georgetown, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into El Dorado County Jail.

Forests grapple with 8,500 gun incidents
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/10/2015 - 8:39pmPerched around a secluded campfire in the Rocky Mountains, Glenn Martin jerked forward, said, "Ow," and died. The wayward bullet that struck him in the national forest has campers and other users calling for changes in recreational shooting policy.
Martin, 60, died July 3 in the Pike & San Isabel National Forest, 30 miles southwest of Denver. The 3.1-million-acre forest holds the record for the most gun-related violations reported in the country, a review of federal records by the USA TODAY Media Network shows.

Study: Most teens start school too early in morning

The American Academy of Pediatrics last year urged middle schools and high schools to start no earlier than 8:30 a.m. in order to allow teens — who are biologically programmed to stay up later at night than adults — to get the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep each night.
Source of mysterious booms in El Dorado County uncovered
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/08/2015 - 7:36pmMysterious booms have plagued the residents of El Dorado County in California for some time now. While some have speculated what the cause of these booms has been, it's remained a mystery until now.
Residents have reported that the booms aren't as crisp as a gunshot, and instead sound more like an aerial bomb. A few have speculated that it could be the result of work occurring in an underground mine.
Lightning to bring critical fire danger to Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service has issued a fire weather watch for the greater Lake Tahoe Basin and California’s Mono and Alpine counties from late Thursday afternoon through late Thursday night as an area of low pressure approaches that could bring dry thunderstorms.
Seven inmates injured in Carson City prison fight
Submitted by paula on Wed, 08/05/2015 - 4:45pmA fight between two inmates Tuesday at the Warm Springs Correctional Center in Carson City resulted in one of the prisoners being flown by Care Flight to a Reno hospital after he was shot by guards with rubber pellets, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. Six others were injured.

The Perseid meteor shower reigns king during the warm evenings of midsummer, attracting stargazers to dark sky locations in hope of catching a glimpse of a falling star. This year is especially good since there will be no moon to wash out the celestial fireworks.
