June Lake reacts to resort closure

There is no shortage of gloom in June Lake.
When Mammoth Mountain Ski Area announced last week (June 21) that it would close down the June Mountain ski area at least until the end of the 2012-13 ski season, the reaction was swift and tense.
"I think it’s been pretty clear the entire eight years since I was elected that this is exactly what I have been working to avoid,” said June Lake’s county supervisor, Vikki Bauer.

Study: Moderate Coffee Consumption Offers Protection Against Heart Failure

While current American Heart Association heart failure prevention guidelines warn against habitual coffee consumption, some studies propose a protective benefit, and still others find no association at all. Amidst this conflicting information, research from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center attempts to shift the conversation from a definitive yes or no, to a question of how much.

Lake Tahoe crawfish plans move forward, TRPA hearing July 5

Scientists now estimate close to 300-million crayfish in Lake Tahoe and they say that is adding up to clarity problems for the lake.
"The crayfish are like cattle on the landscape, moving across the lake bottom," says Dr. Sudeep Chandra who is a lake specialist and a professor of limnology at UNR. "They eat dead algae and fertilize more algae blooms and we think that is impacting the clarity of the lake."

Column: Finding our place in history

I met Aletha Tom a few weeks ago when I was writing a story about the organized effort to refurbish the “S” for Stewart painted on the hillside above the former American Indian boarding school.
She graduated from the school in 1965 but didn't return until many years later, after she'd gotten married and had kids of her own.
Passing through Carson City, she took a spontaneous detour to her alma mater. As she walked onto the grounds of the old Stewart Indian School, she told me, the present faded away.

Nevada Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki is Romney's man behind Lake Tahoe Olympic Bid

It’s been a long time since the Golden Days of Lake Tahoe. It was the 1960s, to be exact, after the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, when the Nevada-California ring of resorts caught on with nation and world. While always a relatively consistent draw for second homeowners, skiers, campers and gamblers, the destination clutch suffered its fair share of downturns during the A-frame era and general ups-and-downs of the ski industry through the years.

California Budget Cuts Threaten the Status of Universities

Class sizes have increased, courses have been cut and tuition has been raised — repeatedly. Fewer colleges are offering summer classes. Administrators rely increasingly on higher tuition from out-of-staters. And there are signs it could get worse: If a tax increase proposed by California Gov. Jerry Brown is not approved this year, officials say they will be forced to consider draconian cuts like eliminating entire schools or programs.

Researchers at Fallen Leaf confirm ancient 'megadroughts' around Lake Tahoe and Sierra Nevada

The erratic year-to-year swings in precipitation totals in the Lake Tahoe, Carson City and Reno areas conjures up the word “drought” every couple of years, and this year is no exception. The Nevada State Climate Office at the University of Nevada, Reno, in conjunction with the Nevada Drought Response Committee, announced Thursday a Stage 1 drought (moderate) for six counties and a Stage 2 drought (severe) for 11 counties.
Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada are no strangers to drought, the most famous being the Medieval megadrought lasting from 800 to 1250 A.D. when annual precipitation was less than 60 percent of normal. The Reno-Tahoe region is now about 65 percent of annual normal precipitation for the year, which doesn’t seem like much, but imagine if this were the “norm” each and every year for the next 200 years.

Update: California OKs plan to use pesticides at Lake Tahoe

California's Water Resources Control Board OK'd plans on Tuesday that could allow pesticides to be used for the first time in Lake Tahoe. The measure now moves to the Environmental Protection Agency. The new rules permit pesticides as a last resort to control invasive species like Eurasian milfoil, an aquatic plansold for aquariums which is choking the bottom of marinas around the lake.

Pesticides considered at Lake Tahoe to fight invasive species

The State Water Resources Control Board is confronting a major controversy Tuesday: whether to allow pesticide use in Lake Tahoe. Some believe it will save the lake from being choked to death by invasive species, while others say it could destroy an environmental treasure.
Lake Tahoe supports a $5 billion economy and a stunning natural eco-system. But all the beauty is facing a growing underwater threat — plants and animals that are not supposed to be there.

Regulators: Nevada Online Poker in 7-10 Months

Americans could see the first U.S.-based licensed and regulated real-money poker site this holiday season.
At Monday’s Gaming Policy Committee meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark Lipparelli said that the Silver State will likely issue its first licenses in 30-60 days — and it will probably take another six to eight months after that before games are running.
Despite efforts from a handful of other states, Nevada remains the only jurisdiction in the country where online poker is legislatively authorized.

California facing $16 billion shortfall

SACRAMENTO — California's budget deficit has grown to a projected $16 billion and the state will have to make severe cuts to schools and public safety if voters reject tax hikes in November, Gov. Jerry Brown announced Saturday.
Anti-tax groups and Republican lawmakers say both tax increases will hurt California's economic recovery. State GOP Chairman Tom Del Beccaro kicked off a statewide campaign earlier this month, saying he wants to discuss alternatives to Brown's tax hikes.

Drop in prices lure second-home shoppers to Lake Tahoe

Lately, however, with interest rates dipping below 4 percent and home prices seeking bottom, the Fair Oaks couple started thinking differently. The Santoses recently joined a growing number of would-be buyers scouting the Tahoe area for second homes.

People from all over the world are in the tiny town of Lotus in El Dorado County looking for something that’s out of this world, but leave it to a stay-at-home mom walking her dog to find a precious meteorite.
Meteorites landed in California’s Gold Country several days ago, creating a modern day gold rush.
The rock Brenda Salveson found is 17 grams, equal to just over a tablespoon of sugar. But when it comes in the form of an asteroid, its weight has no boundaries.
“I was lucky, blessed, good karma,” Brenda said. “It was sitting there at my toes like an Easter egg.”

California voters to decide on death penalty in November

California Secretary of State Debra Bowen has certified a measure for the November ballot that would eliminate capital punishment. Instead, prisoners would receive life without the possibility of parole.
Opponents include Republican State Senator Joel Anderson, who has tried unsuccessfully to change the death penalty process — including a bill that would have eliminated expensive, automatic appeals.
"To move forward and say that we're going to move these people into life without parole is to ignore what the public has asked for time and time again," said Anderson.

'Cash mobs' mobilize to boost small businesses

Bringing together strangers, often through social media, the cash mob events aim to support locally owned merchants. The upshot: stores get a windfall, and 'mobsters' learn more about their city and meet new friends.
Similar to so-called flash mobs — groups that assemble in public to perform often frivolous activities such as dancing — cash mobs bring together strangers. But the purpose is serious: to support locally owned businesses with a quick injection of cash. The trend is part of a larger "buy local" movement that has emerged in response to the rise of big-box national chains that are putting the squeeze on mom and pop stores.

California advocates seek to cut school suspensions by tossing 'willful defiance' charge

School suspensions were once reserved for serious offenses including fighting and bringing weapons or drugs on campus. But these days they're just as likely for talking back to a teacher, cursing, walking into class late or even student eye rolling.
More than 40 percent of suspensions in California are for "willful defiance," or any behavior that disrupts class, and critics say it's a catchall that needs to be eliminated because it's overused for trivial offenses, disproportionately used against black and Latino boys and alienates the students who need most to stay in school.
