Submitted by paula on Wed, 06/10/2020 - 10:54amDOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The 110th annual Carson Valley Days Festival has been canceled but the parade is still happening on Saturday, June 13 starting at 9:00 a.m. Due to health concerns with COVID-19, the popular carnival and all other events were canceled but the Douglas County Commissioners granted approval for the annual parade.
South Lake Tahoe forecast: Temperatures closer to average by midweek

The showers will be diminishing this evening with a cold night Sunday. There will be widespread freezing temperatures with South Lake Tahoe seeing mid-20s. Things will start warming up closer to average by the middle of the week with lighter winds. Another low is possible Friday and Saturday with breezy winds, showers, and cooler temperatures.

Two men rescued from Lake Tahoe after their kayaks capsize
Submitted by paula on Sun, 06/07/2020 - 9:42amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two men were pulled from the chilly waters of Lake Tahoe after their kayaks capsized late Saturday afternoon.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. on June 6, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue's Marine 17 was dispatched to the water off of Baldwin Beach for possible kayakers in distress. One of the kayakers was able to make a call and the GPS coordinates put the two men several hundred yards off the shore between Baldwin Beach and Emerald Bay.
Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe Saturday followed by chance of snow
Submitted by paula on Sat, 06/06/2020 - 12:16amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe remains in effect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6. Also under the warnings are Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser, and Boca.
The National Weather Service is forecasting southwest winds 20-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe could be 2-4 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
And if the wind wasn't enough, there is a chance of snow for Lake Tahoe Saturday night.

Prescribed understory burn in Sugar Pine Point State Park starts June 1

Smoke may be visible.
The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team lists all current burn projects on their website at https://www.tahoelivingwithfire.com/get-informed/. The one next week at Sugar Pine is the only one currently scheduled.
Overnight closures of I-80 westbound lanes this week for paving project
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/26/2020 - 8:50amCaltrans will continue overnight paving work along an approximate three-mile stretch of westbound Interstate 80 near Colfax starting Tuesday, May 26, requiring full overnight closures of the westbound lanes.
Final paving work is scheduled overnight Tuesday, May 26 through Thursday, May 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Martin Brothers Construction of Sacramento will be repaving westbound lanes of the interstate between Rollins Lake Road and the State Route 174 junction in Colfax; an area known as the Colfax Narrows.

Afternoon thunderstorms could form starting Tuesday, mainly along high terrain. Storms look to become more widespread late week. Stronger winds, a few showers, and more seasonable temperatures (the 60s) are projected next weekend as low-pressure approaches from the Pacific, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears results in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year, local law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.

Winds from the west 15-20 mph are expected on the lake with gusts to 35 mph. Waves will be 1-3 feet with the highest waves on eastern shores.
Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
Temperatures will be rising at the lake, with a dip into the 80s anticipated by Tuesday!

A late-season storm will bring gusty winds, below-average temperatures, mountain snow, and periods of valley rain for the rest of today through Tuesday. Cloud cover hangs around into Wednesday keeping temperatures below seasonal averages with a few showers possible. Winds increase Thursday ahead of another system
which could bring a second round of cooler temperatures and scattered showers back to the region for Friday and Saturday.

Winds are expected from the southwest at 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
After the winds, the real fun starts with snow and rain in the four-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe.

Today - Partly sunny, with a high near 68. Light southwest wind increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.

There is a Lake Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday. Stronger winds will be north of US50 and east of US395. The winds will bring a cooling trend as a low-pressure system reaches the northwest U.S. coast. TDFPD is planning on burning in Glenbrook on May 12 and in Zephyr Cove on May 20, 2020. State Paks is planning on burning at Sugar Pine Point State Park on the West Shore on May 11 and May 18. Both are weather permitting and smoke be visible.

Temperatures by next weekend will be soaring into the upper 80s across western Nevada with the upper 70s in the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

The team from the Department of Water Resources (DWR) measured 1.5 inches of snow with a snow water equivalent (SWE) of 0.5 inches which is three percent of average for May 1.
The SWE measures the amount of water contained in the snowpack, providing a more accurate forecast of spring runoff than snow depth alone.
Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe through Thursday night

Southwest winds 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are forecast on the lake. Waves are expected 2-4 feet.

Humboldt-Toiyabe: No camping in Alpine County, updates on forest use during pandemic

“We recognize that this overnight camping restriction comes at a time when many are seeking respite in natural areas,” said Forest Supervisor Bill Dunkelberger. “However, this temporary closure is to support state, county, and local authorities in controlling COVID-19 pandemic.”

Full closure of US50 over Echo Summit planned for June

The $14.1 million Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement Project will replace the bridge with a structure that meets current seismic and safety standards.
Travelers can expect daytime work with one-way reversing traffic now, with around-the-clock one-way traffic control from May 26 until May 31, then full closure from June 1 until about June 14.
Caltrans and its contractor expect work to be completed this year.

The best chance of showers will be in the eastern Sierra Monday afternoon and evening where some light snow accumulation is possible at the highest passes. High pressure will build for the end of the week with dry conditions and temperatures rising to well above normal levels over the weekend and early next week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

At 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said to expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges.

That all went awry by afternoon as the weather models show a cold front dropping further south than originally planned and into northern California and Nevada with the jet stream near the Oregon border.
There will now be increased winds for Wednesday through Friday afternoons, particularly for thee Sierra ridges. The highs decreased and will now be closer to average and a chance of precipitation lingers.
Safe shopping for all age groups during coronavirus pandemic

One of those is a trip to the grocery store.
Even with all South Lake Tahoe grocery stores open, it doesn't mean it should be shopping as normal, a.k.a. "pre-coronavirus days."
Most households don't have refrigerator or freezer space, or even cupboard space to not have to make a run to the grocery store once in a while. But the fewer trips one makes, the better it is to remain safe and virus-free.

Chain controls in place on Lake Tahoe area roads
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/25/2020 - 8:21amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Weather Advisory in place until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Expect snow to fall in Lake Tahoe for another day as the latest in a series of small storms passes through.
For Wednesday: Snow likely before 11:00 a.m., then snow showers after 11:00 a.m. Some thunder is also possible. High near 35. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

The only change to the earlier weather forecast is a slight increase in projected snowfall for areas east of SR89.
Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in South Lake Tahoe with 5 to 10 inches along and west of Highway 89. Local amounts of 10 to 15 inches possible near the crest. They are calling for winds gusting up to 40 mph this afternoon and evening in the greater Lake Tahoe area.
Lake Tahoe Forecast: Expect small series of weak to moderate winter storms this week

"The health and safety of our guests and employees is our primary concern. During this time of uncertainty, we will do our part to help stop the spread of this virus," the resort spokesperson Sarah Sherman said in a statement.
Vail Resorts announces closures now for season with chance of Heavenly opening for Spring skiing
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/17/2020 - 9:57amFollowing their earlier announcement of temporarily closing all ski resorts due to the coronavirus COVID-19, Vail Resorts today announced all of its North American resorts and retail stores will remain closed for the 2019-20 winter ski season. These closures are amidst the continued challenges associated with the spread of virus across the globe.
Dependent on the COVID-19 situation and weather conditions, Heavenly may reopen in late April/early May. The company may also consider reopening Breckenridge Ski Resort in Colorado and Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia.

Winter arrives the first week of Spring in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 03/16/2020 - 8:04amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin through Tuesday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. Expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations through Tuesday of 4 to 10 inches and 12 to 18 inches above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
Chilly and unsettled weather is expected to persist into the first half of next week with a stormer weather pattern possibly continuing through the end of March according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Sierra-at-Tahoe to close for at least 72 hours
Submitted by paula on Sat, 03/14/2020 - 9:37pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A day after they canceled events that were deemed high-risk, Sierra-at-Tahoe has announced they are suspending operations on Sunday, March 15 for at least 72 hours.
In a statement, Sierra-at-Tahoe said they apologized for the short notice and for any inconvenience it may post to their customers.
