Winter Storm Warning now in place for Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/13/2020 - 3:30pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded the storm this weekend to a Winter Storm Warning with an increase in their previous forecast for snow accumulations and added winds. It begins Friday at 11:00 p.m. and goes until Monday at 11:00 a.m.
They are calling for heavy snow with total accumulations of 1-2 feet under 7,000 feet and 2-4 feet above. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph with ridge winds gusting to 100 mph in the Greater Lake Tahoe area.
The winds will create areas of blowing and drifting snow.

More mild and sunny conditions will return for the last half of the work week before another storm approaches for the weekend according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Expect increasing southwest winds Friday into Saturday with the strongest winds expected to be near and north of US-50 where gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely. Wind prone locations along the US-395 corridor could potentially see gusts to 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Just as the forecast over the last few weekends, a slight chance of snow returns on Friday nigh with dropping temperatures.

The promised winter weather arrived overnight, with 8" of snow reported at the South Shore of Lake Tahoe by Sunday morning. Area ski resorts are reporting 4"-12" and Reno and the Carson Valley, due to some lake-effect snow, had 5"-7".
Even as the storm exits, expect wind as a new Lake Wind Advisory has been issued from noon on Sunday to 4:00 a.m. Monday.

After unseasonable warmth the past few days, expect a sharp change in the weather Saturday evening into Sunday as a powerful cold front sweeps across the Sierra and northern Nevada.

Last year, all three of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth All-Star age divisions were Nevada State Champions. Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.
Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

Lake Tahoe forecast: Dry end to February, what does March look like?
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/23/2020 - 6:10pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lighter winds return Monday and persist through much of the week as high pressure settles into northeast California and western Nevada. Dry conditions continue this week with high temperatures remaining above average. Low pressure may impact the region next weekend with gusty winds along with rain and snow showers.
Any rain or snowfall amounts will not be heavy but could cause travel impacts and will be welcome after a dry February, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno.

Almost half of the West in dry-drought conditions, including Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/20/2020 - 11:05pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It isn't news to those who live in or frequent the Lake Tahoe region, the area has been experiencing very dry conditions this winter. Even though dry, it is not bad enough yet to put Tahoe into a drought category. The Drought Monitor released this week by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) places 45 percent of the country in the D0-D4 categories, or abnormally dry to exceptional drought. This is a big change from 2018-19. At that time Lake Tahoe had well above average snow, but 62.6 percent of the U.S. fell into the Do-D4 categories.

Expect cooler temperatures and drier conditions for much of this week. A new system is possible towards the end of next weekend.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, current indicators point to a sharp frontal boundary associated with a tight pressure gradient. Most of the week will see normal temperatures and dry conditions persisting with a chance of light snow showers moving through the region Thursday night into Friday.

The winds throughout the Sierra have closed not only Kirkwood Mountain Resort operations for the day but also Sierra-at-Tahoe. Some lifts are on wind hold or closed at Heavenly Mountain Resort, Squaw Alpine, Northstar, Mt. Rose and others.

Science Expo volunteers needed in both South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village

Volunteers will facilitate a hands-on science investigation station with small groups of elementary students. All the volunteers need is a willingness to have fun and share science with local youth. Training will be provided prior to the event.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work is winter suspension on a $5.2 million project to upgrade metal beam guardrail and construct concrete barriers at 89 locations from the Red Hawk Undercrossing to 1.9 miles west of the junction with State Route 89 in Meyers. Completion is expected in late spring 2020.
Quick moving storm passing by Lake Tahoe Sunday; Big drop in temperatures Monday
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/02/2020 - 2:04pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Sunday a sharp cold front will rapidly push through the region, bringing strong winds and a quick burst of snow. The widespread southwest winds Sunday morning will be shifting to the northwest behind the front.
A Lake Wind Advisory is up for Lake Tahoe until 7:00 p.m. Sunday. The strongest winds are anticipated to be near and south of US-50, with US-395 possibly seeing travel restrictions for high profile vehicles.
Inversion brings unusual heavy fog to South Lake Tahoe

On Friday and Saturday, a strong inversion was in place at around the 7,000-7,500 foot level, compressing the molecules that normally evaporate off of the lake and keeping them trapped closer to the ground and the lake.
Inversions exist on a fairly common schedule, but the experience the past two days was different for a couple of reasons:

Submitted by paula on Fri, 01/31/2020 - 12:24pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites the public to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort this winter, starting on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours will begin each Friday at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.
Sierra snowpack at 79% of February average
Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/30/2020 - 7:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted the second manual snow survey of the season at Phillips Station Thursday, and they found 40.5 inches of snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE) of 14.5 inches. The snowpack at this location is 79 percent of the February average, with the rest of the state measuring in at 73 percent of average.
The Phillips Station total is 58 percent of the seasonal average.
"It's decent but below average," said Sean de Guzman, chief of DWR’s Snow Surveys and Water Supply Forecasting Section.
Forecast: Weak system followed by above average temperatures in Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Sun, 01/26/2020 - 10:25pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A ridge of high pressure is building off the southwest coast, one that will bring light wind and warm daytime temperatures with overnight inversions ot Lake Tahoe, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. Before it gets here though there is a small system moving through the area that brings a chance of rain and snow to Lake Tahoe at the beginning of the week.
Each day this week will see above-average temperatures. The average daytime high for this week is 40 with a low of 23.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm is currently delivering heavy snow and creating unsafe road conditions in the Lake Tahoe Basin. There are several updates to roads and schools for Thursday at 5:00 p.m.:
Due to numerous spinouts, traffic on US50 is being held at Twin Bridges. Crews are also in the region performing avalanche control.
SR89 at Emerald Bay is closed due to unsafe conditions. No estimated time of reopening.

This storm will bring heavy mountain snow, strong gusty winds, and plenty of travel headaches. Once through Thursday, expect less active weather over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend with the possibility of more storms next week.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday with the Lake Wind Advisory up until 7:00 p.m.
Both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort are reporting 1" of new snow this morning, so far. Kirkwood reports 3" of new snow.

A series of weak to moderate winter storms will affect the area, each with widespread snow and wind impacts across the Sierra and western Nevada. This weekend's snowfall will be minimal at lake level.
Winter Weather Advisory for South Lake Tahoe starts at midnight

Periods of light snow are expected. Total snow accumulations 1-3 inches for Truckee and Lake Tahoe areas, with 2-5 inches at passes including Donner and Mt Rose.
Most of the snow will fall between midnight and 6:00 a.m. Thursday.
A storm coming in on Friday night looks to be part of a busy storm pattern through the Martin Luther King holiday weekend.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - Operation Sierra Storm, a leading national weather conference being held on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe Jan. 26-28, 2020, is a cutting-edge meteorological forum and seminar for network television meteorologists from around the country.

The next weather system next weekend is system is expected to be colder, wetter, and stronger than recent storms, but still an overall average storm for the region. Impacts will likely include moderate snow totals for the Sierra, lighter accumulations across western Nevada, some travel disruptions possible for aviation and ground routes, and some gusty winds.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 01/02/2020 - 2:46pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) conducted the first manual snow survey of the season at Phillips Station Thursday, and they found 33.5 inches of snow depth and a snow water equivalent of 11 inches. The snowpack at this location is 97 percent of average, with the Sierra as a whole at 90 percent of average.
2020 starts off with sunny days in South Lake Tahoe after windy end to 2019
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/30/2019 - 12:55amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first week of the new decade looks to be a calm one with some sunny days, but first, there will be some wind and a chance of snow to deal with.
There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect from 7:00 a.m. Monday to 7:00 a.m. Tuesday. Expect winds from the east 10-20 mph with gusts 30-35 mph. Waves on the lake should be 1-3 feet.
Dozens of new California laws go into effect in 2020

There are many changes including road safety and distracted driving penalties, roadkill rules, minimum wage, independent workers and rent caps.

Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/23/2019 - 12:27amSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will be below average for the rest of the year as the second part of the storm that brought snow Sunday makes its way into the Lake Tahoe Basin to start off the week.
Snow looks to continue for Monday spreading into western Nevada and impacting holiday travel. After a brief break overnight Sunday, precipitation is expected to
increase in intensity once again for Mono County and the Tahoe Basin early Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Winter Weather Advisory in place for South Lake Tahoe Sunday

A Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service (NWS) is in place from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday, December 22.
