Caples Creek Fire within prescribed burn parameter, now 25 percent contained

The Caples Fire burning southwest of Lake Tahoe is now at 2,400 acres and is 25 percent contained. The fire started as a prescribed burn but was changed to a wildland fire Thursday afternoon which allowed more resources to be sent to the scene. It is still within the planned prescribed burn project area.

Smoke is still in the Lake Tahoe Basin and Carson Valley. Smoke sensitive individuals are encouraged to reduce their exposure by avoiding smoky areas, closing windows, or staying indoors.

Caples Creek prescribed burn turns into wildland fire

The Caples Creek prescribed burn that has been sending smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin and Carson Valley all week has turned into a wildland fire.

On October 10 at approximately 1:30 p.m., fire managers made the decision due to unfavorable weather conditions and the inability to meet previously established objectives. This change allows for additional resources to assist in suppression from partners such as CalFire.

Colder temperatures delay paving Highway 50; Work expected into weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With below-average temperatures in South Lake Tahoe this week, the paving of the Highway 50 project has been delayed and may go into the weekend.

Mid-day Thursday it is still in the 30s though a high of 51 degrees is in the forecast. The low overnight will be 18 degrees.

CAL FIRE firefighters are staffing up and preparing for the forecasted extreme fire weather across California. The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings and fire weather watches for areas of northern, central and southern California. This will likely be the strongest offshore wind event so far this season.

Cooler but mostly sunny week ahead in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Warm autumn weather continues before a cold front brings breezy winds Tuesday and Tuesday night followed by much cooler temperatures Wednesday and Thursday. Widespread freezes will occur Thursday and Friday mornings. Next weekend should be mild and dry, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Warm fall temperatures on tap for Monday after a cool morning with light winds. It begins to change Tuesday with increasing winds ahead of a strong, dry cold front. Some lake concerns are possible with the stronger winds.

NDOT changing exit signs on I580 in Carson City

Beginning Oct. 6, exit numbers on the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway will change as part of a Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) project to resurface and enhance the interstate.

The current exit numbers range from 38 to 42, and through the coming week will be replaced with new, lower exit numbers corresponding with roadway mileage as follows:

Fairview Drive - Exit 3
U.S. 50/Willian Street - Exit 5
College Parkway - Exit 6
Arrowhead Drive - Exit 7

South Lake Tahoe weather: Nothing but sun for foreseeable future

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A warmer and drier trend will be in store through early next week. Dry conditions with light winds are expected through the weekend. Light winds ill prevail on Wednesday with increased winds Thursday. Wind gusts could reach around 25 mph Thursday afternoon across valley locations across the Sierra and western Nevada with 40-50 mph possible along Sierra ridgetops.

October 1, 2019 marks the first day of the 2020 Water Year and reservoirs in the state are still full from the epic snow year of 2018-19. California began a new water year today with significantly more water in storage than the previous year thanks to above-average snow and precipitation.

Winter Weather Advisory returns overnight in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A winter storm just days after the first day of Autumn isn't too unusual for the Lake Tahoe region, but it always catches everyone by surprise and leaves one wondering if Fall will return.

Many areas at lake level saw an inch or so of snow, with a few inches at upper elevations. Expect more of the same Sunday night into Monday morning. The Winter Snow Advisory goes into effect Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. and lasts until 10:00 a.m. Monday.

New highway closure plan for Stateline; Round-the-clock work begins Sept. 30

STATELINE, Nev. - At 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 30, NV Energy will resume work on Highway 50 in Stateline on the South Shore with new measures in place for traffic flow. A previous attempt resulted in traffic backed up to Zephyr Cove.

The work is to replace equipment in two underground electric vaults. The new traffic plan will be in effect 6:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30 through approximately 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4:

• One lane of traffic will be open in each direction on Highway 50 through the casino corridor.

Two Lake Tahoe boat ramps to continue watercraft inspections as roadside stations close

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – This week marks the last full week of summer operations for watercraft inspection stations around Lake Tahoe. Starting Oct. 1 the duties will move from roadside stations to inspecting only at the Cave Rock and Lake Forest launch ramps for the winter season.

Red Flag Warning for western Sierra and Nor Cal valley, PG&E begins safety shut-off

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of interior Northern California up into the foothills to elevations under 5000 feet.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 23, PG&E began turning off power for safety to about 24,000 customers in portions of Butte, Nevada and Yuba Counties. By approximately 8:00 p.m., PG&E had completed the task of turning off power for public safety to about 24, 000 customers in the Sierra foothills. Power will remain off until weather conditions improve and it is safe to restore service.

Prescribed burns to resume around Lake Tahoe Basin

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fall Prescribed Fire Program may begin as early as September 24, 2019, under the management of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies.

Weather and conditions permitting, California State Park crews may begin prescribed fire operations in Burton Creek State Park near Tahoe City and in a couple of weeks move to D.L. Bliss State Park near Tahoma.

Smoke will likely be present.

Chance of snow by the end of week in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Monday is the first day of Fall! For today, expect tranquil weather conditions with a light northeast wind and cooler temperatures as a cold front makes its way out of the region. Students of South Tahoe High School got a taste of fall this week, as the weather brought rain and wind. Homecoming Week planning began, students learned about the impact of social media, and sports teams prepared to travel this weekend.

The Homecoming Parade is slated for October 12. Students plan on walking from T.J. Maxx to the high school to celebrate homecoming traditions. Ms. Russel’s leadership classes expect a big crowd and a fun day before the homecoming dance that evening.

Lanes close as NV Energy replaces underground vaults at Stateline

STATELINE, Nev. - NV Energy will start work on Highway 50 at Stateline on Wednesday morning to replace equipment in two underground electric vaults.

The work, including excavation and repaving, is estimated to be completed by October 11. The schedule is subject to change based on weather.

During this time, NV Energy will work closely with the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) regarding road closures.

September snow around Lake Tahoe - Rain and some sun in the forecast

SOUTH TAHOE NOW, Calif. - There was a blast of winter-like weather around the Lake Tahoe basin on Monday, but no need to panic if unprepared for snowy conditions.

Temperatures dropped nearly 30 degrees across much of northwestern Nevada and northeastern California since 1:00 p.m. yesterday.

Temperatures well below average with highs mainly in the 60s for lower elevations. This low will keep clouds and shower chances over the region,
with the best overall chances across far northeast CA and northwest

Red Flag Warning and Wind Advisory in place for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for the greater Lake Tahoe area from 11:00 a.m. to Sunday to 11:00 a.m. Monday and a Lake Wind Advisory until 5:00 p.m. Monday.

A strong cold front will bring southwest to west winds of 15 to 30 mph with gusts 35 to 45 mph beginning Sunday morning and lasting into Monday. The humidity with this front is low - minimum 8 to 18 percent Sunday afternoon, with poor recovery tonight. Minimum 15 to 25 percent early Monday.

Full closure of US50 over Echo Summit delayed until 2020

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The full closure of US Highway 50 over Echo Summit planned for October 18 has been postponed until next year.

The seven precast bridge girders needed for the Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct (bridge) Replacement Project will not be ready in time for an October closure. Instead, contractor Q&D Construction will winterize the job site and come back to finish the project next year.

This is a two-year project that the contractor was attempting to accelerate. It is still on track to be finished next year.

Grinding and paving project in South Lake Tahoe to cause delays

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Caltrans grinding and paving project got underway Monday in South Lake Tahoe, causing traffic delays with travel reduced to one lane in each direction at the "Y" intersection.

Work got underway at 5:00 a.m. Monday at US50 and SR89. The roadway will be ground down and replaced with new asphalt.

For the duration of the paving work, the contractor is permitted to have around the clock lane reductions, weather permitting. The intersection operation is expected to be completed within a week.

South Lake Tahoe forecast: Warmer temps return by the end of the week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cooling trend will take place tonight through Tuesday
as a trough of low pressure moves across our region. Dry and warm conditions will return Wednesday through Saturday as a flat ridge moves across the western US and the Intermountain West, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

After a period of warm and dry weather late this week, some models are hinting at a trough moving into the western US early next week, which could bring breezy winds and cooling temperatures to our area Sunday into Monday.

Update on fiery tanker explosion in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 36-year-old man from North Highlands, California has been identified as the driver of the gasoline tanker involved in Saturday's deadly crash and explosion.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has released more information based on its investigation. No names are being released at this time.

Echo Summit closure moved out to October 18, Caltrans tells those at public meeting

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is now looking at October 18 as the beginning of a two-week closure of US Highway 50 at Echo Summit.

Chance of thunderstorms and showers in the Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The region will see above average temperatures with afternoon breezes continue through Labor Day. Thunderstorm chances return beginning Monday and lasting through Thursday with the most widespread storms on Wednesday. Temperatures will gradually cool stating Wednesday but will remain above normal, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The storms will be most numerous near and east of Highway 395.

Next weekend remains uncertain, but confidence has increased somewhat that another upper low will approach the coast.

Caltrans updates Echo Summit two week closure time frame

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.. - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has updated the estimated closure time for US50 over Echo Summit.

Red Flag Warning in place for areas west and east of Lake Tahoe

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for Wednesday, August 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for Carson City and the portion of Douglas County in the valley. Also under the warning are other portions of Western Nevada, the Eastern Sierra and the west slope of the Sierra.

The Lake Tahoe Basin does not fall into this warning.

The Red Flag Warning is for thunderstorms and strong outflow winds. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

US50 over Echo Summit may close up to 14 days this September

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Highway 50 over Echo Summit may close up to 14 days this September to allow the Caltrans contractor to install new girders and demolition work on the existing bridge structure.

There will be two meetings to inform the public of the potential closure and detour (see attached map). Local residents and businesses will be issued passes to use Johnson Pass Road as a detour during the closure, which if in place would be toward the end of the month. More information on that will be provided at the meetings and not before.

Above normal temperatures for LakeTahoe in the week ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As we head into the Labor Day holiday, temperatures will be well above normal through the upcoming week, with the warmest conditions most likely Tuesday. Dry conditions are likely to prevail through the week except for a chance of thunderstorms near the Sierra crest on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Another sunny and warm week in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Sunny. Warm. Afternoon Breeze. Repeat. Quiet weather anticipated through the end of August with dry conditions and typical late day breezes. Temperatures will cool a few degrees going into Monday but rebound to above normal again by the middle of the week.

Even drier air will be moving in the next few days, causing poor overnight humidity recovery for the higher elevations.

Final piece of the Lake Tahoe fire camera network now in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - What would happen if fire-fighting agencies could stop a wildfire before it gains momentum and wipes out homes, communities and/or forests? That is being answered with well over 100 fire cameras now in place across the west, all because of foresight of Dr. Graham Kent, the Director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR).

Sunny and warm week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dry conditions, a gradual warming trend, and typical afternoon breezes are expected through Wednesday in the Lake Tahoe area. Stronger winds Thursday and Friday could bring increasing fire danger. Temperatures will be above average even with a cooling trend that is likely by Friday. Overnight temps will dip below average.

According to the National Weather Service, weather conditions will be great for viewing the peak of the Perseid meteor shower tonight and Monday night, but the nearly full moon will, unfortunately, wash out many of the dimmer meteors.

New fire preparedness tools unveiled by the City of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be another fire in California, but when and where cannot be predicted and is unknown - but what is known is there will be another community that is devastated by wildland fire.

Residents around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra know this all too well and have been talking about concerns of wildfire threats in and around the Tahoe Basin. Those conversations have turned into plans and the City of South Lake Tahoe has just released an interactive website to help both residents and visitors map out an evacuation plan based on their neighborhood.

Work schedule at Meyers roundabout moves to overnight hours

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is in the middle of three major projects on the South Shore, with one of them changing their scheduled construction hours.

The $7.1M roundabout construction project at the intersection of US50 and SR89 in Meyers is moving from daytime work hours to a night shift from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. starting Tuesday, August 6. Flaggers will also be conduction one-way reversing traffic control as they finish up the roundabout. The completion is expected later this month or in early September and the nighttime work schedule will remain until the project is done.

High winds, low relative humidity, and dry vegetation are a dangerous combination. When dangerous fire weather is forecasted, the National Weather Service may issue a Red Flag Warning.

Drivers and beach goers share the highway in Lake Tahoe; More safety improvements ahead

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - It's summertime, a beautiful time of year that brings with it perfect beach weather, something evident by the hundreds of cars parked along the roads around Lake Tahoe on a daily basis.

Two of those areas that bring the most vehicles full of beachgoers are Zephyr Cove and Round Hill Pines, two very popular Lake Tahoe spots. Drivers along the highway don't always slow down to speeds slower than the posted 45 mph, keeping it a dangerous stretch on busy beach days with car doors opening and people walking on the road with their coolers and beach gear.

New Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map released for 2019 paddling season

Paddlers enjoying Lake Tahoe now have an updated resource available to navigate the 72 miles of the lake's shoreline.

The Sierra Business Council has just released the 2019 Lake Tahoe Water Trail Map & Access Guide to help paddlers safely find their way along the water route. It pinpoints all of the 37 public launch and landing sites, including the Lake Tahoe Water Trail's 20 trailhead sites with wayfinding signage, restrooms and parking.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Cali. - The week starts off with another windy afternoon/evening, though speeds are likely to be about 5 mph lighter than Sunday. Even with the slight decrease in winds, near critical fire conditions are once again expected along the Sierra Front and Western Nevada. The remainder of the week will feature more typical summer afternoon wind speeds.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will continue to warm with hot temperatures expected on Friday and Saturday for Reno, and a stretch of 80s beginning in Lake Tahoe.

Typical afternoon breezes will prevail through Friday with gusts around 20-25 mph. Stronger gusts will develop on Saturday and persist through Tuesday with the strongest winds expected on Sunday. It will be nothing unusual for mid-summer, but peak gusts could be around 35 mph which may be a fire weather concern.

Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities and refrain from activities that could start a spark.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) it partnership with Heavenly Mountain Resort once again 'invites the public to 'Hike with a Ranger' beginning July 12, 2019. Hikes will take place every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola. The guided hikes last approximately one hour and continue every weekend through September 8, 2019, weather permitting.
