SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Expect seasonal temperatures along with typical summer breezes through the middle of the week, although slightly stronger winds are
possible Wednesday. The weather is looking pleasant for the 4th of July holiday and nothing but sunshine for the parade.

Chautauquan Kim Harris will portray Lizzie A. Borden on Wednesday, July 10, at 6:30 pm, and historian Mark McLaughlin will speak on “Lake Tahoe and the Comstock Era; Stories, Facts and Fun” on Saturday, July 13, at 10:00 am, at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

Lizzie Andrew Borden was tried and acquitted in a court of law for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in 1892, in Fall River, Massachusetts. The court of public opinion sentenced her to a life of public scrutiny and branded her a social pariah.

North Tahoe and Meeks Bay Fire Districts ban all recreational campfires and open burning

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - June 26, 2019 was the first day of the year categorized as "High Fire Danger" in the Lake Tahoe Basin, prompting two area fire districts to impose fire restrictions by suspending all recreational campfires and open burning.

On June 17 CAL FIRE suspended residential burn permits in the Tahoe Basin, followed by today's new restrictions by North Tahoe Fire Protection District (NTFPD) and Meeks Bay Fire Protection District (MBFPD).

Wind advisory in place for Lake Tahoe and Sierra: Water activities could be "hazardous"

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory to be in effect from noon Tuesday to 11:00 p.m. Thursday on Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Fallen Leaf Lake and others in the Sierra Nevada.

Winds will be from the south to southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 40 mph each afternoon and evening through Thursday. Winds will slacken up some overnight and into the morning; however, some chop may continue through the night, especially on Lake Tahoe, according to NWS-Reno.

Wave Heights on Lake Tahoe will be 2 to 4 feet for mid-lake to north and east shores.

Welcome to summer! The solstice officially arrived Friday at 8:54 a.m., welcoming in the longest day of the year. As the snowpack melts away, and the lake fills above rim, we enter the warm and dry months that we relish after winter. As Lake Tahoe’s landscape begins to dry out, wildfire danger will grow.

Our respite from the seasonal dangers of wildfire here in the basin is coming to an end. With temperatures climbing, relative humidity lowering, and afternoon winds blowing across the lake, the basin will become susceptible to wildfire.

Windy start to the week ahead for South Lake Tahoe, small drop in temps

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A low-pressure system is heading to Lake Tahoe, bringing with it cool, below-average temperatures later in the week, gusty winds, and fire weather concerns. Tuesday to Thursday look to be the windiest days with impacts likely, especially on area lakes according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Widespread gusts of 30-40 mph are expected Wednesday night.

Warming temperatures will return for next weekend along with continuing dry conditions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Spending his workday outdoors and on the water in Lake Tahoe wasn't hard for Tanner Hart to imagine, and since buying Boat Docks Inc from life-long local Doug Gayner in January its something he gets to enjoy every day.

Gainer started the company over 40 years ago, specializing in boat docks in the Tahoe Keys. Now Hart has hit the waterways with the new Boat Docks Barge, something he designed, engineered and built with the help and support of Dan Benson.

South Lake Tahoe to see some 80s this week before a drop in temps

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be some instability remaining over the Sierra through Monday with thunderstorm remaining a good bet Monday before fading from view Tuesday onward as drier and more stable airmass moves in.

A strong ridge works into the region Tuesday into Wednesday leading to hot temps but nothing excessive. It breaks down Thursday leading to some below average digits. Just as Lake Tahoe experienced this winter, ridges are finding a hard time sustaining themselves for prolonged periods.

NV Energy and Liberty Utilities outline wildfire mitigation plans for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With electrical transmission lines found to be at fault in recent California fires, agencies responsible for supplying electricity to communities have been creating plans to prevent fires in the future.

Both companies that supply power to Lake Tahoe, NV Energy and Liberty Utilities, have announced new mitigation efforts to reduce the risk of fire.

Sunken sailboat to be removed from Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If you've been near the shore of South Lake Tahoe at Regan Beach at any time since fall you've most likely seen a partially sunken sailboat sitting just offshore. The boat's mast and wet sails have been sticking up through the water, an eyesore to many trying to take photos of the scenic view, a topic of conversation to others trying to figure out what happened.

Warmer temps ahead for South Lake Tahoe; Rapid melting of snowpact expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will become very warm with highs near 80s in Lake Tahoe and above 90 degrees for most lower elevations Monday through Wednesday. Dry conditions are expected through Tuesday, then isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms will be possible from Wednesday through next weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Spring is still struggling to get a hold on Lake Tahoe. The widespread storm threat that has been present all week in Lake Tahoe starts to decrease Monday and Tuesday as the low-pressure system which has produced scattered showers and thunderstorms will slowly drift eastward. A warming trend is expected through Wednesday, then a quick cold front will bring windy and cooler conditions later this week, with the strongest winds likely on Thursday.

3rd annual Tahoe Brewfest benefits Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club

The third annual Lake Tahoe Boys and Girls Club Tahoe Brewfest will be held this Saturday, June 1 in the Heavenly Cal Lodge parking lot.

VIP tickets are sold out online (a few will be sold on Saturday) and they allow guests into the event at noon. The doors will open for everyone else at 1:00 p.m. and the event ends at 4:00 p.m.

South Lake Tahoe Farmers' Market starts June 4

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The weather is changing, the mornings are warming and the fruits and vegetables are ripening. The El Dorado County Certified Farmers Market at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe returns on Tuesday, June 4.

The market will be every Tuesday in the American Legion parking lot from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. through October 8, 2019.

Each week attendees can meet the farmers, learn about the produce they bring to the market, and how to prepare it. Each week's bounty reflects on what is ready and ripe. There are also arts, crafts, coffee and more.

LTCC leases South Lake Tahoe property for student housing

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is taking a first, big step toward helping address the lack of affordable student housing in the community by leasing a five-unit apartment building near Ski Run Blvd.

The college's trustees gave authority to school administration to sign a five-year lease with the owner of that apartment building during their meeting Tuesday evenings. The lease starts on July 2, 2019.

Interpretive sign unveiling at Tahoe Paradise Park

Six interpretive signs are being installed around Lake Baron at Tahoe Paradise Park and the public is invited to their official unveiling on Saturday, June 1 at 10:00 a.m.

The Board of Directors of Tahoe Paradise Recreation and Park District worked with the staffs of the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) and the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) and received input from students and teachers at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School to develop the signs.

14th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge June 1-14

It appears Mother Nature will be offering some great biking weather for the hundreds of participants in the 14th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge June 1 - 14. The two-week basin-wide event is a team-based challenge to encourage everyone to ride and experience the benefits and joys of cycling.

This week at South Tahoe High School, the cold weather continued while students dressed up for “Versus Week,” seniors visited Lake Tahoe Community College day, and athletes brought home gold from the state championships.

The spirit week theme was “Versus.” Students dressed up as nerds versus athletes, tourists vs. locals, rappers vs. country musicians, and more. A spirit rally is being held Friday to support the school’s canned food drive.

Annual Lake Tahoe report: 10.5 more feet of clarity in 2018

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - What a difference a year can make! In 2018, the annual test of Lake Tahoe's clarity value made a drastic change and improved to 70.9 feet. This is 10.5 more feet than was seen in 2017.

In the release of their annual report, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) in Incline Village said a return to more normal weather and streamflow conditions was responsible for this change.

There is a glimmer of what will look like on Monday when the sun should shine before the next storm. A Winter Weather Advisory returns to the Lake Tahoe Basin, this one starts May 20 at 8:00 p.m. until May 21 at 10:00 a.m.

Keep Tahoe Bears Wild - Practice proper food storage and trash disposal

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Lake Tahoe natural resource and law enforcement agencies remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues, as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.

While it felt like spring had finally arrived, we all know Mother Nature can be fickle, especially at Lake Tahoe. For those who love to play in the snow, it was a fantastic winter, and a banner year for the Sierra snowpack. Despite some cooler weather now, steady warmer temperatures are on the way and our attention is shifting from the mountains to the lake.

Winter Weather Advisory in place for the weekend in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As one storm exits Lake Tahoe the next one is waiting in the wings and heading in on Saturday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno issued a new Winter Weather Advisory for Lake Tahoe from Saturday evening to Sunday morning. Expect snow covered roads with total snow accumulations of up to 3 inches, except 4 to 10 inches above 7000 feet. It will be a windy one with gusts between 50 and 85 mph over exposed ridges.

If traveling to and from the Lake Tahoe Basin expect the chance of chain requirements over the summits.

Lime scooter launch party in South Lake Tahoe Friday

Lime scooters are returning to South Lake Tahoe as soon as weather permits, but in preparation of that day they are holding a Lime Launch Day on Friday, May 17 from 1:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lakeview Commons.

At the launch party, Lime staff members will be on hand to meet the community and introduce them to the Lime app. They will also be giving out helmets and promoting safety, as well as letting the public know the routes through South Lake Tahoe where the popular mode of transportation is permitted.

The party is being held, rain or shine (or snow).

Lake Tahoe spring storm to continue into next week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Hope you didn't put away your winter coats yet! A weather pattern more typical of early March rather than mid-May came into the Lake Tahoe basin overnight, leaving behind a dusting of snow at lake level. This unusual and persistent weather pattern will continue to send cold Pacific storms into California and Nevada through next week. Expect periods of rain, mountain snow, and strong gusty winds.

Reports of reckless driver in South Lake Tahoe leads to arrest of felon

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received numerous calls from the public on Tuesday evening at approximately 5:00 p.m., alerting them to a reckless driver in a Honda running stop lights and speeding on Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

As officers responded and attempted to locate the vehicle and its driver they got a report of a Honda crashing into another vehicle in a driveway near the 900 block of Macinaw Rd.

Chance of rain, even snow, in the Lake Tahoe forecast

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A change to the weather pattern for Lake Tahoe is expected next week as incoming low-pressure systems provide increased winds,
cooler temperatures, and wetter conditions.

There is even a chance of snow on Friday.

Drier air is pushing into the northern half of the forecast area on Monday with a shift to a wetter, cooler pattern on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

No closure of SR28 at Incline Village needed tonight

Granite Construction and Nevada Department of Transportation crews have made great progress on the bridge decks for State Route 28 shared use path project near Incline Village and the overnight closure scheduled for tonight, Tuesday, May 7, is not necessary.

Both directions of SR 28 will be closed between Lakeshore Boulevard in southern Incline Village near Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor State Park from 8 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. nightly during the following dates:

Unsettled weather continues next week with additional chances of showers and isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages this week, and possibly becoming warmer than average by next week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

This week at South Tahoe High School, students had to put their jackets back on, as the weather cooled down. A trio of students will take turns acting as student council president, and a 13-year-old partnership on the baseball pitch comes to an end.

On Campus
Students attended Industry Day on Tuesday to learn about different careers. They heard presentations from a range of companies, including the nutrition department and rehabilitation center of Barton Memorial Hospital.

Completion date of Fanny Bridge/ SR89 project pushed out, final stage may start in 2020

The SR89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe has not progressed as expected and completion will not happen in 2019 though lots of work is scheduled.

Weather, utilities and construction scheduling have put it well behind the original 2018 planned completion and now construction work will be getting off to a late start in 2019 because of high water levels at the lake and Truckee River after an above average winter of snow and rain. Crews are expecting to start around mid-June.

Weekly South Lake Tahoe forecast: Cooler temperatures with a chance of rain

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Temperatures will be near normal Monday as a cold front moves through the Lake Tahoe Basin. Cooler temperatures and light rain are expected Tuesday before a warm-up occurs late week. Unsettled weather looks to make a return next weekend.

LTUSD recognizes staff on California Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Bus drivers in Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) were honored today during a celebration of California Bus Driver Appreciation Day.

The special day was created by the state legislature in 2009 “in order to draw special public attention to school bus drivers for their continued and excellent services to pupils in California.” After being created in the state, it has now spread to a nationally observed day on the fourth Tuesday of the month of April.

Keep Tahoe Blue Earth Day volunteers gather 750 pounds of trash and 6000 cigarette butts

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Over 60 people volunteered at the 5th annual South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Cleanup on Monday, April 23. They removed 750 pounds of trash which equals to 1,047 gallons of littler, as well as over 6,000 cigarette butts in just three hours.

As the warmer weather continues to melt snow, trash is being exposed. Not only is this an unsightly mess it can also be a hazard to wildlife and the lake's clarity.

Opening dates announced for USFS recreational spots around Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - The snow is melting and temperatures are rising, signaling the change of seasons in Lake Tahoe, and the opening of campgrounds, beaches and other recreational areas.

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will soon begin the process of opening their facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin, weather and snow conditions permitting,

The first two beaches to open will be Baldwin and Nevada with an opening date planned for this Saturday, April 27, 2019.

Sunny week ahead for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a while since the forecast had nothing but sunshine in it, but that is what is ahead for the Lake Tahoe Basin next week! Due to the warming temperatures, watch for increased flow in area streams and rivers due to the snowmelt.

For Monday and Tuesday, the northerly flow that started over the weekend will persist but gradually weaken as high-pressure noses into the region. The northerly flow will still be rather gusty Tuesday morning across area ridges but should diminish through the day.

Douglas County teams removing debris from river channels ahead of spring flooding

With warming temperatures and melting snow, Douglas County is reminding residents of the potential for some minor spring flooding in the months to come. With the spring run-off, citizens could expect to see some road closures on arterial roads such as Mottsville, Centerville Lane, Muller Lane and Genoa Lane.

In preparation for flooding, the Douglas County Stormwater Division has been removing flood debris in river channels with the Carson Valley Conservation District, Carson Water Subconservancy and Nevada Division of Water Resources.

Another week of typical spring weather ahead for South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ever-changing weather for the Lake Tahoe Basin is a normal spring pattern though most are hoping with more sun and less snow and rain. This week will be much of the same.

Active spring weather returns to start the new week with a pair of storms set to make impacts to most of the region. Gusty southwest winds, valley rain, and mountain snow are expected through Tuesday. Sunshine and warmer temperatures return for the second half of next week as high pressure moves in according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Work resumes on shared use path in Incline Village along SR28

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The final stage of the three-plus mile shared-use path from the southern end of Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park along SR28 will begin on April 22, ending a four-year, multi-agency water quality and traffic safety improvement project.

2nd Bi-Annual Basin Blitz shows Caltrans renovations help Lake Tahoe

The League to Save Lake Tahoe held its second bi-annual Basin Blitz this spring to assess progress in improving Lake Tahoe’s stormwater infrastructure (pipes, drains and sediment-catching basins). These features flow directly into Lake Tahoe and carry fine sediment pollution from our roads and neighborhoods into the lake, further degrading its clarity.

Prescribed fire operations continue in Tahoe Basin

Weather permitting, Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the USDA Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

Unsettled weather continues for the Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The forecast is beginning to sound like a broken record - Rain, snow, sunshine, repeat. Mother Nature keeps sending us bits of everything in the Lake Tahoe forecasts. Never fear....at this point it looks like a week of sunshine coming soon!

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory, which is in effect from noon to 9:00 p.m. Monday. The advisory is for Tahoe, Donner, Fallen Leaf, Prosser, and Boca lakes. Winds will be from the southwest 15 to 20 mph, gusts to 40 mph. Waves on the lakes will be 1 to 3 feet.

Daffodil Hill closes for the season after just one weekend

For those waiting for an annual sojourn down State Route 88 to Daffodil Hill, it's time to change your plans. They opened for the season on March 30, not knowing their season would only last two days.

A rainy week has more than dampened spirits, it also damaged the thousands of daffodils lining the four-acre farm owned by the McLaughlin family.
