Guest Columnist: Working together to improve Tahoe’s transportation system

As a national treasure offering world-class recreation opportunities, Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Northern California and Nevada. And sometimes, being popular has its challenges.

Tahoe’s limited roadways become congested during times of peak visitation, when thousands of people who live in nearby metropolitan areas get in their cars to drive up to our small mountain communities. Suddenly, a road system designed for 55,000 residents must handle four to five times that many cars on an average busy day.

Kudos: Warm Room open house a success

Change for South Lake Tahoe in week ahead: Sun, Rain, Snow

Mother Nature has decided the Lake Tahoe Basin isn't done with winter, yet. Monday, March 20 is the first day of Spring, and in true Tahoe fashion, rain is in the forecast.

A fast moving shortwave will move through the Pacific Northwest Wednesday, bringing wind and a chance of rain to Lake Tahoe. Three small weather systems are lined up to pass over the Sierra Nevada.

Here is the forecast from the National Weather Service:

Tonight - Isolated showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 35. Southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

This story has been updated 3/16/17.

The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board formally accepted the resignation of Chad Houck, the principal of South Tahoe High during their Tuesday night meeting, though word of the upcoming change in leadership had been circulating for weeks.

"Chad will be seeking other opportunities," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater.

The popular principal has received a lot of support from parents, the community and staff.

Informed drivers one way to prevent Sunday gridlock in South Lake Tahoe

Many drivers plan ahead when planning their travel along highways in interstates across the county. Want to miss rush hour? Don't hit that city in the morning and late afternoon. Mad dash to Santa Cruz on a warm Saturday? Leave early in the morning or go the night before to miss the backup of traffic.

Smooth travel over Highway 50 in the Sierra requires the same planning or one will get stuck in heavy traffic on Friday evenings heading to Lake Tahoe, or Sunday mornings leaving Lake Tahoe (or the day after a holiday).

Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe in need of a new truck

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT) is need of a truck after a recent crash on Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe totaled their 2002 Chevy. This truck was vital to the club's transportation needs and insurance will not cover replacement.

Nobody was hurt in the collision.

During the school-year, the truck is used to transport food to and from the club's satellite site, Bijou Elementary School, as well as donations that the community provides.

Kudos: A Thank You from South Shore’s Hardy Pedestrians, Cyclists, and Bus Riders

A big thank You to the City of South Lake Tahoe, the County of El Dorado, and the businesses and residents of Tahoe’s South Shore for clearing the snow from your sidewalks and paths.

Even during these big storms, you have made sure the multi-use paths and many sidewalks on the South Shore are passable. And after two feet of snow overnight, you made the roads and paths safe enough for 500+ locals to take to the streets by 11am on Jan 21st for the Women’s March. This is a big and welcome change from the previous years of sidewalk and bike path "freshies". Let’s save those for the slopes.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts take 8 of top 10 "Biggest snow days of ski season"

The winter of 2016-2017 has been exceptional for skiers across the entire west. Colorado has flourished, California has shed any trace of drought and Jackson Hole is on a pace to break its own record for snowfall.

With so much snow, nearly every ski resort has piled up powder days. For those who took a ski trip this year and missed a big snowfall, it truly was a bad break, as storms have consistently stalked the west all year.

During a season so outstanding for snow, there have been a handful of storms, often one on top of another, that have produced gaudy one-day snow totals.

Sierra "phenomenal" snowpack not a record, but water content at 179% of average

The Sierra Nevada snowpack continues to build during one of the wettest winters in California’s recorded history and this was evident as the monthly snow survey was conducted by the Department of Water Resources at Phillips Station near Sierra-at-Tahoe.

The snow water equivalent (SWE) measured was 179 percent of average, or 43.4 inches.

The 113 inches of snow at Phillips Station contains the fifth-highest March 1 reading of the SWE. In 1969, the record reading was 57.4 inches of snow-water content in 160.9 inches of water.

Potholes a high priority for City of South Lake Tahoe; Work to begin as weather permits

Potholes are a reality anywhere water is able to get under pavement, and after a long, hard winter as South Lake Tahoe is experiencing, our local roads are not immune. They seem to be everywhere, and drivers on many roads can be seen using defensive driving skills warranting an "ace" on a Sega GT or Daytona USA video game.
