SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The atmospheric river that slammed into California continues to cause issues for travelers as it starts to depart the state.
US-50 from Ice House Road to Meyers was closed for much of the day on Saturday, only to shut down again after briefly reopening due to poor conditions (as of 1 a.m. Sunday it is open with chain controls). Caltrans crews spent the evening pulling out cars that were ill-equipped for the heavy snow.
Several large boulders fell onto Highway 50 Saturday night near Kyburz. They will require explosives to remove. Fortunately, no one was injured and there is enough width to keep one lane open in each direction.
I-80 is still closed from the Nevada state line to Placer County due to multiple spin-outs.
SR-89 is closed at Emerald Bay.
SR-88 is closed at the Carson Spur.
In Nevada, SR-431, Mt. Rose Highway is closed, Kingsbury Grade is closed on the valley side,
Conditions can change rapidly so visit https://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/ for current issues and information in California, and https://www.nvroads.com/ in Nevada.
The storm is exiting the Sierra and New Year’s Day is forecast to be mostly cloudy with a high of 32. The Winter Storm Warning expires at 4 a.m.
