SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Several new businesses will open in South Lake Tahoe in 2025, which is normally an indication of economic growth, job creation, an increase in goods and services available to residents and visitors, and an overall sign of a thriving community.
While no city-wide economic studies have been completed to see the impact of these new businesses and what they will bring to South Lake Tahoe, they are a positive change for a town that has seen an increasing number of vacant and/or deteriorating buildings.
South Lake Tahoe has been attracting new investments and many locals are looking forward to what is to come in the next few months.

New businesses in 2025:
Target – In the old Raley’s at Stateline, construction has been underway since the roof collapsed in Winter 2023 after Target had been announced as the new retailer in the location. They carry general merchandise including clothing, household goods, electronics, toys, and more. It hasn’t been revealed if it will carry groceries in the 60,000 sq. ft. location,
Ulta – In the old -K-Mart at the Y. The store carries both high-end and low-end cosmetics, fragrances, nail products, bath and body products, beauty tools and haircare products.

The next phase of Sugar Pine Village will open this Fall, adding 60 units to the 68 that opened in Fall 2024. The remaining two phases will bring an additional 120 units when built.
A cornerstone of the heart of South Lake Tahoe will be finished by the beginning of 2026. The new South Lake Tahoe Recreation and Aquatics Center will be along Lake Tahoe Blvd., and the new upper-level event center will offer views of the lake. There will be a multi-lane pool, a lazy river, basketball courts, a gym, walking course, rooms for classes and meetings, and a kitchen for the senior nutrition programs.
It will be nice to see the Sunray Motel torn down. The fenced-in property is still in private hands and no plans are in place yet for tear-down and rebuild. Anything with a chain-link fence surrounding it should be dealt with.
The Motel 6 and old Carrow’s buildings will be torn down and open space and meadow restoration will come in its place.
There is progress at the old “Hole in the Ground” at Stateline, but the high-end housing in the works is only on the front portion. The back is still empty and for sale.
