In December, Bread & Broth (B&B) was awarded Vail Resort’s EpicPromise Community Grant to support the organization’s mission to address food insecurity in the South Lake Tahoe region.  Each year, this grant provides financial and in-kind donations to many non-profits in the local area, and B&B is appreciative to once again be a recipient of this funding.

The EpicPromise funds support several of B&B’s food outreach programs.   The B&B 4 Kids/Tots program continues to provide weekend food bags for children in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District who face food insecurity over the weekend.  Additionally, B&B also distributes these food bags to children aged 18 months to five years of age at eight childcare centers serving low-income families.  Approximately 300 children are served weekly.

In addition, this grant will enrich the organization’s “Green Goal” project, which focuses on the purchase of fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and dairy products.  This ensures that dinner guests at the weekly Monday Meal have access to nutritious food during the week, improving both their physical and mental health.  Fresh produce, butter, eggs and milk are distributed in “takeaway” bags, which are distributed at the hot meal service.  Many dinner guests have shared that this is their only access to these fresh items as they are currently too expensive to purchase.

The EpicPromise Grant will provide funding for six Heavenly Mountain Resort and six Kirkwood Mountain Resort B&B “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” Monday Meal events.   The grant money supplements meal expenses,  and at each sponsored event, 4-5 employees from either Heavenly Resort or Kirkwood Resort will volunteer their time to set up, serve, and clean up at their designated  Monday Meal.

B&B extends its greatest appreciation for the continued support from Vail Resorts and the partnership with the two local ski resorts, Heavenly and Kirkwood.   Their generosity allows Bread & Broth to continue its pursuit of providing nutritious food for individuals, families, and children who face hunger in our community.
