A Cameron Park man will be spending the rest of his life in prison after he was sentenced this week after being found guilty of crimes including
criminal threats, domestic violence, multiple counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer and special allegation(s) related to the use of a firearm and inflicting great bodily Injury on a peace officer in the line of duty.
Michael Allen Hoffer, 47, was sentenced twice, once for 45 years and 4 months and the other for consecutive 25 years to life.
The convictions arose out of a March 16, 2015, domestic violence incident between Hoffer and his girlfriend that was heard by a neighbor who called 911. The domestic violence victim fled from Hoffer’s residence in the 3000 block of Oakwood Road on foot after being brutally beaten, choked and pistol whipped by the defendant.
When deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) arrived, Hoffer had posted himself in a second story window, armed with a numerous firearms including a
fifty-caliber AR-15 style rifle. As the deputies began to gather outside the house to investigate the 911 call, Hoffer opened fire with that rifle, raining down a hail of bullets on the uniformed officers.
Hoffer reportedly fired dozens of rounds from his house before his house caught fire and began to burn. As he fled the burning residence he was caught and detained by deputies. Hoffer’s house burnt to the ground in less than 45 minutes, leaving experts to conclude the fire was intentionally set with the use of an unknown accelerant.
In 2010, Hoffer had been arrested for causing corporal injury to the woman he was living with.
