SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Another system is moving in from the Pacific Monday, bringing with it high winds and a chance for moderate snow at upper elevations.
To start, a Wind Advisory is in place from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday, February 1 for South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City, Truckee, Markleeville, Stateline, Glenbrook, and Incline Village. Expect winds from the southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Waves 2 to 3 feet with highest waves along eastern shores.
Then, starting at 10:00 p.m., a Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 4:00 a.m. Wednesday. This was initially a Winter Storm Watch but has since been downgraded to an advisory. Snow is expected with total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches, except 8 to 16 inches above 7000 feet with the higher amounts likely near the Sierra crest. Winds gusting as high as 80 mph across higher elevations of the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.
NWS said the snow potential has been trended downward due to the majority of the guidance showing a pretty significant split for the approaching trough, with the southern portion digging farther off the California coast and the northern portion brushing across the Pacific NW and far northern Nevada. The bulk of the snow is projected to occur over the advisory areas from Tuesday morning through the evening, then shift to areas south of US-50 by early morning.
Lower elevations of eastern California and western Nevada will see mainly rain which may end with a rain-snow mix. A drier pattern with near average temperatures is then likely for the remainder of the week.
By Thursday and Friday, conditions will be brisk but dry.
