SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – As forecast, this past weekend’s atmospheric river (AR) resulted in rain at lake level, and snow along the Sierra crest. An active weather pattern continues with two more waves of the AR this week though snow should be seen in South Lake Tahoe.
The next in a series of winter storms will impact the Sierra starting Monday, and into Wednesday. This will have lower snow levels than this last weekend and continued strong winds. At first, a foot of snow was predicted, but that has dropped at lake level.
The previous Winter Weather Watch for this period has been upgraded to a Winter Weather Warning and is in place from 1 p.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Wednesday. The warning says heavy snow with snow accumulations between 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet and 6 to 12 inches below 7000 feet, and less at lake level. Winds gusting as high as 90 mph along the Sierra crest and 35 to 40 mph in lower valleys.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in place until 10 a.m. Tuesday with southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and waves 1 to 4 feet.
A more significant system is possible by Thursday into Friday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. As it gets closer, more details will be determined on snowfall amounts but NWS says to expect heavy snowfall, continued strong winds and much colder temperatures – nine degrees on Saturday night!
