SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Sunday was an epic day on the slopes with at least 30″ of snow falling overnight at resorts around Lake Tahoe. Some couldn’t open because of too much snow, while others opened some runs to overflowing crowds waiting to experience the conditions.
Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Boulder and Stagecoach parking lots filled up early, with drivers directed to park at the Gondola at Heavenly Village and the California Main Lodge, both filling up soon after.
Many skiers took to parking along Ski Run Boulevard, something that is permitted in an agreement between the resort and the City to help add parking. Both provide snow plowing on the street but Sunday’s conditions were tough to keep up with, and the cars parked along the road did not allow for easy snow plow activity.
The City had to close the road due to accidents and congestion, along with stranded vehicles.
SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney said they don’t normally close a road and Sunday was a rarity. To help prevent a repeat, Laney has scheduled two Community Serice Offices (CSOs) for both Saturday and Sunday to handle the anticipated traffic heading to the slopes.
Another issue the officers will keep an eye on is the traffic on Keller Road which also leads up to Heavenly. It can easily turn into an ice rink, leading to a pileup of cars.
