SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -Several firefighters, police officers, and medics responded to a fire at the Step By Step Early Learning Center on Wednesday, February 19. The alarm went off at 10:45 a.m., and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jim Drennan took command. His department immediately sent two engines and one truck, Lake Valley Fire sent a chief and engine, and the Cal Tahoe JPA sent one ambulance.
At the time of the fire, there were 56 kids inside ranging in age from six weeks to five years old, along with 17 staff members. All evacuated safely to nearby Athletex Gym after the front desk staff there saw the smoke and knew the kids needed a warm place to seek shelter.
The fire was knocked down at 11 a.m. There are two investigators on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
No medical aid was needed.
