INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. – A truck traveling on SR28 Tuesday on icy and snowy roads jackknifed, causing about 50-75 gallons of diesel fuel to spill onto the roadway.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) responded after receiving the call at 12:19 p.m. The initiated immediate cleanup operations on the stretch of road which is adjacent to a drain that leads to a creek that leads to Lake Tahoe.

NLTFPD was able to stop the majority of the diesel before it reached the drain, according to NLTFPD Fire Chief Ryan Sommers. They set up a secondary catch basin to catch any fuel as a precaution and used absorbent booms in the creek to trap any fuel that made it in.

The Sparks-based environmental company, Clean Harbors, also responded to perform clean up.

Sommers said the seven-hour ordeal wrapped up at 7:00 p.m. He said he is confident they caught most, if not all, of the fuel.
