SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – With heavy snow on residential and commercial roofs around Lake Tahoe, some buildings are showing the stress of the extra and unusual weight.

Today the canopy at the vacant Runnels Automotive property tipped over, most likely due to the weight of the snow.

As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the City of South Lake Tahoe had an inspector over at the property at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Emerald Bay Road to investigate. They will make the determination of safety to the public, and cover the next steps with the new property owner. If there is a concern for general public safety the building will be “noticed” as being unsafe, and the City will go through an assessment of resources.

There are more buildings in the City that are seeing the stress of the weight of snow, including Sidestreet Boutique which had a partial collapse of a beam. If a building is unsafe the City or County will place a notice on the outside to alert the public.

The Runnels Automotive building was sold prior to the former owner John Runnels passing away in December 2022.

If you are in El Dorado County and experience a partially collapsed, collapsed, or uninhabitable building, call Building Services at 530-621-5315. This is not a number for help with removing snow.
