The Importance of Being Earnest is Oscar Wilde’s witty Victorian comedy about two bachelors, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who invent alter egos named “Ernest” to escape social obligations and pursue romance, leading to hilarious confusion over mistaken identities, double lives, and the true meaning of being “earnest” (sincere) versus the name Ernest. The play satirizes Victorian social conventions through clever wordplay, farcical situations, and memorable characters like the formidable Lady Bracknell, making it a classic of English literature.
