SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – I’m still coming down from the high of the production of Chicago last Fall, so you can imagine my delight when I quickly glanced over the cast list in the program…are you kidding me? Maci AND Gloria??!! The dynamic duo is back in full force, along with quite a cast of characters. It is pretty amazing how Director Ethan Niven can pull such top-notch performances out of these kids. A true testament to Ethan’s professionalism, clearly respected by his uber-talented actor students. Oh, and of course, with Ethan, you get his mom, Niv, who was the Theatre Director at the high school for so many memorable years.

I must admit, I am not familiar with the works of Oscar Wilde. Regarding this play, numerous friends of all ages told me about their love of this piece. Whether they had to read it in their high school English class 30 years ago, or they just saw it performed in Ashland to great reviews, or it just happens to be the favorite play of my 16-year-old friend Ellie from Santa Cruz.  Geez Louise, where have I been??

Well, I have certainly been schooled after enjoying last night’s opening performance. The period-perfect sets, the exquisite costumes, all added to the terrific energy on stage. This play was imaginatively written in 1895 using a more exquisite form of British English. The play on words and the clever use of euphemisms are beautifully executed. You will want to listen well so that you don’t miss any of the quips and jokes.

As always, my friends and I were amazed at the incredible memorization skills of these young thespians. The witty and fast-paced dialogue kept the story going; the night flew by. My friend Rachel, age 17, said the beginning of the play was a bit confusing, but the very quirky and twisty plot line soon became clear. She was very impressed with the physicality of the acting. The histrionics and flamboyancy on stage had the audience laughing out loud, very loud!

Oh, and my friend didn’t know what a perambulator was…but she does now! Do you?
