EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. – On Monday, March 24, 2025, the El Dorado County School Boards Association (EDCSBA) held its annual awards ceremony at Cold Springs Golf and Country Club, recognizing exceptional service and commitment to education.

Paula Peterson, editor and publisher of SouthTahoeNow.com, received the Outstanding Community Member Award for her impactful contributions to education through journalism and community engagement. Known for her balanced, insightful, and solution-oriented reporting, Ms. Peterson has played a vital role in elevating public understanding of issues affecting Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). She consistently collaborates with LTUSD and community leaders to highlight challenges, celebrate successes, and spotlight the work of educators and staff.

Beyond her journalistic contributions, Ms. Peterson’s extensive involvement in local
nonprofits—including as founder of Bread & Broth 4 Kids, which provides meals to
LTUSD students in need—demonstrates her deep commitment to the well-being of the community. Her leadership roles in organizations such as Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra, Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids, and the Lake Tahoe Historical Society underscore her far-reaching impact. Her work has not only informed but inspired action, fostering positive change throughout LTUSD schools and the broader South Lake Tahoe area.

Bonnie Turnbull and Larry Reilly, retired LTUSD Board Trustees, were each presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their eight years of dedicated board service. Ms. Turnbull was celebrated for her thoughtful leadership, advocacy for students and families, and commitment to inclusive decision-making. Mr. Reilly, also a former educator with over 30 years of service, was honored for his deep educational insight, policy leadership, and unwavering focus on student success.

Dr. Todd Cutter, LTUSD Superintendent, shared his appreciation, stating, “It is very
exciting recognizing the incredible partnership with Ms. Peterson and SouthTahoeNow.com and the lasting impact that Bonnie Turnbull and Larry Reilly will have on the LTUSD education community.”

The event highlighted the lasting impact of community and board leadership in
advancing public education across El Dorado County.

(Editor’s note: I am not one who normally says anything about myself and LTUSD wrote this story. I extend my appreciation for the recognition.)
