Former Truckee High School head football coach Robert Shaffer was killed in a head-on collision outside of Sierraville at Saturday night according to the California Highway Patrol in Truckee.

Shaffer, his wife Lisa and 22-year-old son Patrick were in their Toyota Corolla on SR-89 in Sierra County just before 9:30 p.m. when a Ford F250 driven by 54-year-old David Slaughter of Sacramento drifted into Shaffer’s lane.

All others in the collision suffered mild to moderate injuries. Lisa Shaffer was taken by ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno and Patrick Shaffer was taken by private vehicle to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee. Slaughter was flown to Renown Regional Medical Center.

“Coach Shaffer was a pillar of our small community,” said the CHP-Truckee on their Facebook page. “He was the head coach who led the fabled Truckee Wolverines to a 4-peat State Championship. Many of our own kids played for Coach Shaffer over the years and as a community this is a extremely tough loss.”

Authorities were still investigating the crash.

Shaffer helped lead the Wolverines to nine state football titles, including four-straight state championships in football. He retired from coaching in 2013.
