SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.. – The Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK) and the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) are providing an opportunity for the public to rid their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the South Lake Tahoe Earth Day at Lake Tahoe Community College on Saturday, April 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Unused medication can be misused by others, including children, and safe disposal is important.
Keeping the drugs out of the environment is also important.
You definitely do not want to dispose of unneeded or expired medications by pouring them down the drain, flushing them down the toilet, or tossing them into the trash without special preparation. That’s how chemicals wind up in soil, waterways, and groundwater.
TASK and SLTPD will have information for the public at their Earth Day booth, along with important tools and information. There will be a limited quantity of locking medication bags and Deterra drug deactivation materials.
For those wishing to dispose of unused medication on days other than Earth Day, there are free disposal boxes located in the SLTPD office and El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office on Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe, Safeway on Johnson Blvd., and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at Stateline, Nev.
