After living a full and rich life, Glenn Edward Barclay, 77, passed away peacefully at home on January 10, 2026, in South Lake Tahoe, California.
Glenn was born in Glen Cove, New York, in 1948, to Edward and Catherine Barclay, and was the third of five children. He graduated from North Shore High School in Glen Head, NY, in 1966. After graduating, Glenn enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1967 to 1971 as a jet mechanic, stationed in Sicily, performing antisubmarine air missions.
After serving in the Navy, Glenn moved to South Lake Tahoe and worked at Harvey’s Top of the Wheel and Edgewood Golf Course, where he was known as Everyone’s Favorite Bartender. Years later, he began a career as a general contractor; his motto was “do it right the first time.” Glenn took pride in doing everything correctly, especially the things that no one would ever see.
While working at Edgewood, he met Nancy, and they were married in October 1981 at Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church. They were in their 45th year of marriage. Glenn and Nancy were blessed with their son Nicholas in 1983.
As a youth, Glenn grew up sailing with his uncle in Long Island Sound, where he developed his lifelong passion for sailing. Glenn loved sailing and racing on Lake Tahoe, around California, and up and down the West Coast and Mexico. He also loved a good party after a big regatta. In Tahoe, Glenn was active in the Windjammers Yacht Club for many years, where he formed and led the Junior Sailing & Racing Program as Nicholas grew up. He had a deep passion for sailing and teaching local youth to race fast and sail safely, and those kids did learn how to sail fast. Wings (sail number 142) was never far from the top of the race results in the mid-to-late 1990’s, and they won a few trophies as well. It was important to Glenn that kids had the opportunity to learn how to sail, not just go on a boat and stay out of the way.
After water sailing, Glenn took up landsailing on the desert playas of Nevada and was active in local landsailing clubs. Nancy and Glenn shared many adventures in their RV camping, sailing, and watching sunsets in the desert and on the beach. Glenn’s spirit was most content whenever he was on the coast; the ocean called him, and he “always had his sea bag packed” ready to leave for the next adventure within the hour.
Photography, woodwork and art! Glenn loved it all and generously shared his gifts with everyone. Long is the list of those who enjoy Glenn’s photographs, lamps, furniture, mailboxes, and more. As Nick grew up, Glenn never missed attending sporting and school events. He would take hundreds of photos and give them to Nick’s friends and teammates, many of whom often thanked Glenn for his pictures that still hung on their walls. As Glenn became a grandfather, he loved doing art projects with his granddaughter, Nora. They loved making things, gluing, sanding, painting, and sharing their art. Glenn loved to have big art projects for the kids on camping trips and at 4th of July parties. Glenn thrived on making memories.
Glenn belonged to the “club” of those who came to Tahoe for a weekend and decided to stay. Living the dream in Tahoe included many years of skiing, sailing, camping, creating, and loving life. He is remembered for his adventurous spirit, artistry, and funny sense of humor.
Glenn is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Catherine, his older brother Robert, and his mother-in-law Evelyn Worley.
Glenn is lovingly survived by his wife Nancy, their son Nicholas and daughter-in-law Michele, and granddaughter Nora, whom he called “the light of his life.” He is also survived by his sisters Kathleen and Patricia; brother Willy and sister-in-law Lynn; nieces and nephews Robin, Barbara, Tara, David, and Brandon; in-laws Melodee and Barry and niece Jessica; as well as many other extended family members, including his “Tahoe Family.”
A celebration of life is being planned on May 23 at Steamers Bar & Grill in South Lake Tahoe, noon – 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Glenn may be made to Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation scholarships by visiting https://ltccfoundation.org/donate/.
