SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – California Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil, Senate District 4, recognized Roberta Mason as the South Lake Tahoe 2025 Woman of the Year. Roberta was celebrated during Tuesday’s Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Board of Trustees meeting next to the library that bears her name.

This honor acknowledges Roberta’s extraordinary contributions to the South Lake Tahoe community and the LTCC District. Earlier this year, LTCC nominated Roberta for this recognition in alignment with LTCC celebrating the college’s 50th anniversary.

Roberta Mason is a founding trustee of LTCC and served on the Board of Trustees for 40 years. Her involvement in LTCC’s formation began in the 1960s, when she joined a small group of committed citizens determined to bring a college to South Lake Tahoe. Despite early setbacks, Roberta and her colleagues persisted, eventually securing the creation of an independent community college district. She was elected to the inaugural Board of Trustees and became the Board’s first President, helping to launch LTCC in 1975.

In recognition of her extraordinary dedication, at the November 14, 2014, Board Meeting, the LTCC Board of Trustees unanimously adopted Resolution Number 4-2014/15, honoring Roberta’s four decades of service. That resolution described her as an exemplary trustee, a tireless advocate for students, and the unofficial “mother” of LTCC, a title that continues to reflect the depth of her impact on the college and its community.

Roberta has also contributed her time and leadership to numerous civic and educational organizations, including Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, the American Association of University Women, and the founding of the Tahoe Parents Nursery School in 1958. She also served on the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education from 1968 to 1973. Roberta continues to be an active member of the LTCC Foundation Board.

Todd White of Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil’s office was at the meeting to formally recognize Roberta Mason as the South Lake Tahoe Woman of the Year.
