SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe held its 37th annual South Shore Spelling Bee on April 24, a lead-up contest to the El Dorado County Spelling Bee in Placerville this May.

Students in grades 1-5 participated in the team competition.

Grade 1-2

Winner – 120 points, Sierra House, coached by Lisa Tonarelli. Team – Camden Littlefield, Forrest Watts, Jaxon Pakes, Zavriah Abraham, Ava Principato, and Rose Silva.

2nd Place – 114 points, Meyers Elementary, coached by Robin Moon. Team – Hazel Garlick, Anneli Villaret, Archer Noecker, Jeremiah Sylvia, Landon Borek, and Luke Styskal.

Grade 3-4

Winner – 99 points, Meyers Elementary, coached by Jacob Biedak. Team – Ty Baker, Ben Ha, Alina Villaret, Devin McStay, Lily Thompson, and Alize Bourdu.

2nd place – 87 points, Bijou Community School, coached by Arcelia Politron. Team – Monet Deeds, Gemma Killingsworth, Trig Roverud, Yadier Vazquez, and Francis Child.

3rd place – 81 points, Tahoe Valley Elementary, coached by Allison Murphy. Team – Elian Ordonez, Kennedy Markoulis, Alannis Cruz Meza, Emma Johnson, Macie Peterson, and Levi Thomson.

4th place – Sierra House, coached by Angela Schneider. Team – Robert Ferrer, Penelope Reilly, Kaden Kelly, Alex Perez, Kennedy Pakes, and Corlan Woodford.

Grade 5

Winner – 121 points, Meyers Elementary, coached by Denise Lehman. Team – Ever Smith, Marie Dross, Kara Baker, Bailey Brown, Skyla Maher, and Katalina Williams.

2nd place – 108 points, Bijou Community School, coached by Bryan Schilling. Team – Prudence Rabb, Miles Dahl, Willa Anderson, Emmi Carrera, Evra Janvrin, and Hanalei Umana.

3rd place – 92 points, Sierra House Elementary, coached by Creighton Scott. Team – Alice Morgan, Gerly Purdy, Maeve Donahue, Jacky Lopez, Calliope Kelley, and Liam Limoh.

Each grade level had five rounds of five words with five students and one alternate, if desired. There were a total of 125 possible points. The rules of the Bee included – Make letters very clear and legible, no scratching out letters (and if they wanted to change, they had to cross out the whole word and try again).

Stumper words:

5th grade – accordion, squelch, endorsement, museum, and analyze.

3/4 grades – lullaby, easel, astronaut, macaroni, and awful

1/2 grades – picture, kept, and cousin

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe wishes to thank all the coaches, students, and parents for their hard work in preparing the students for the county spelling bee.
