The US Representative in Congress for the 3rd, 5th, and 7th Districts will be on the county ballot.
During election season, South Tahoe Now will be reviewing the local measures and meeting with the candidates.
The first candidate who reached out for an interview was the current El Dorado County Treasurer-Tax Collector, Sean Coppola, who was appointed to the position in December after the retirement of Karen Coleman. This is the first time in decades that there is a challenger for this position on the ballot, a total of only twice in the history of the county.
Now we are highlighting his opponent in the race, Corey Leikauf, after a recent chat.
Corey also grew up in El Dorado County, attending schools from K-12, and graduating from Union Mine High School before going to college at Boise State. He was active in the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Program and youth sports during his childhood.
It was while at Boise State that Corey met his wife, Klerisa.
He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science, worked with US Bank, where he perfected his internal controls and customer service skills before pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. He then moved into public accounting and auditing, working with Deloitte & Touche and Eide Bailly.
Corey said he audited insurance companies while with Deloitte & Touche, worked with Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and “complex financial situations.”
For the past 3.5 years, Corey has worked in the El Dorado County Auditor-Controller’s office, where he manages journal entries, day-to-day financial flows, fire protection districts, and other processes.
“The Treasurer and Tax Collector is a natural move, a better fit for me,” said Corey when asked why he wasn’t running for the County Auditor-Controller position against Joe Harn. He said the position would highlight his finance and accounting side.
“If people vote for me, they can count on responsibility and stewardship,” said Corey, due to his operations and auditing experience. “I feel I can step in and be efficient.”
What Corey says he can bring to the job:
- It is an important responsibility, There is solid work is being done there – not going in to change but will see where he can make things better
- Make it so taxpayers can understand how public funds are being handled
- Auditing internal controls – so, is there a way this can be more accountable
There will be a meet-and-greet for Corey at South of North Brewing in South Lake Tahoe on May 9.
