LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of two broadband projects, one on each end of Lake Tahoe. Next week, there will be various lane closures due to the broadband installation project that is ramping back up for the 2025 season on SR28 along the north shore of Lake Tahoe, and the other one begins in Christmas Valley on State Route 89.

The broadband project is part of a larger statewide effort by the California Department of Technology to bring high-speed internet into rural communities. The contractor for this project is Teichert Construction.

Utility work is scheduled along SR 28 at the following locations and times:

Monday, May 5 through Wednesday, May 7, from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m. between Center Street in Carnelian Bay and East Agatam Avenue in Tahoe Vista.

Thursday, May 8, from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m., between Center Street in Carnelian Bay and Anderson Road in Tahoe Vista.

Motorists could encounter total delays up to 15 minutes between Carnelian Bay and Kings Beach on SR 28Please allow for extra time to reach your destination, especially during school drop-off and pick-up times.

The SR 28 Pavement Rehabilitation Project is scheduled to begin in Tahoe City in early June. Specific lane closures will be announced the week prior to the start of construction.

The State Route 89 (SR 89) broadband installation project is beginning next week in Christmas Valley in El Dorado County. Crews will be working along SR 89 and U.S. Highway 50 moving north towards Emerald Bay through this fall before continuing along the west shore ending in Tahoe City in fall 2026. Motorists could encounter total delays up to 15 minutes in the Christmas Valley area next week.

All work on road construction projects will be suspended on weekends and holidays. Schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, equipment or material availability, or other unexpected events.
