ALPINE COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has reopened Ebbetts Pass for the 2025 season/ As of noon. Thursday, Woodfords and Camp Connell Maintenance crews were able to get SR 4 open through the Sierra.

Ebbetts Pass was formally closed to traffic for the 2024-25 winter season in early January and the closure gates have largely remained at Lake Alpine and Raymond Meadows for most of the winter.

This season, while clearing Ebbetts Pass, Caltrans maintenance crews encountered snow levels of 8-12ft in locations along with downed trees, debris, and some extremely narrow one-lane corridors. Once the snow stopped, crews averaged about a mile per day with their snow removal operations and were ultimately able to clear
approximately twenty-six miles of roadway this season.

Caltrans said their top priority is ensuring the safety of the traveling public and our workers, along with supporting the economic vitality of local communities.

“We are happy to have reopened State Route 4 for the season without incident and to allow early public access for recreation activities along Ebbetts Pass,” said Caltrans in a press release. “Caltrans urges motorists to still use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain pass routes and watch for icy road surfaces in the overnight and early morning hours.”

SR89 over Monitor opened last month.
