Subject: Concern Regarding Chimney Beach Parking Fee and Limited Parking Hours
Dear Tahoe Transportation District Board Members,
I am writing to express concern about the decision to charge $12 per day to park in the Chimney Beach parking lot, as well as the limited parking lot hours, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
While I understand the need to manage parking, traffic, and maintenance costs, a flat $12 daily parking fee is not equitable for everyone who wants to access public lands and Lake Tahoe’s shoreline. This fee may be manageable for some visitors, but for local residents, families, students, lower-income individuals, and frequent users, it creates a financial barrier to enjoying an area that should remain broadly accessible to the public.
I am also concerned about the 7:00 p.m. closing time. During much of the year, the sun sets well after 7:00 p.m. Many people visit Chimney Beach and the surrounding area specifically to enjoy the evening hours, watch the sunset, or recreate after work. Closing the lot at 7:00 p.m. effectively prevents people from accessing the area during one of the most beautiful and popular times of day.
This also creates problems for hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers who may be using the backcountry later into the evening. Not everyone recreates on a strict 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. schedule. Some people begin their activities later in the day to avoid heat, crowds, or work conflicts. Others may simply need more time to safely return from longer backcountry routes. Restricting parking access too early may unintentionally encourage unsafe rushing or force people to park elsewhere in less appropriate or less safe locations.
I respectfully ask the Tahoe Transportation District to reconsider both the parking fee and the operating hours. Possible alternatives could include:
- Reducing the daily parking fee or offering a lower-cost local or resident option
- Providing discounted annual or seasonal passes
- Allowing free or reduced-cost parking during early morning and evening hours
- Extending parking lot hours to at least one hour after sunset
- Creating a reasonable system for hikers and mountain bikers who may return later from backcountry use
Public access to Lake Tahoe and surrounding public lands should be managed responsibly, but it should also remain fair, inclusive, and practical for the wide range of people who use these areas. A $12 daily fee and a 7:00 p.m. closure do not adequately reflect the needs of the community, outdoor recreation users, or those who want to experience Tahoe’s natural beauty during evening hours.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I urge the Tahoe Transportation District to revisit this decision and work toward a more equitable and recreation-friendly parking policy for Chimney Beach.
Sincerely,
Donald Wells
