Dave Sommerfeldt, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on May 9, 2026, at the age of 71, surrounded by love from his family in his longtime home in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Dave was born in Oakland, Calif., where he spent the first 18 years of his life. In the mid-1970s, drawn by the beauty of the Sierra Nevada and the promise of a good life, Dave made his way to South Lake Tahoe, where he would plant roots and raise the family that became his greatest pride. The mountains and the lake suited him. He was a man who loved the water — up before the rest of the world on summer mornings, skimming across the glassy surface of Tahoe on water skis while the lake was still calm and the air was cool. Summer weekends were spent on the lake and at the beach with family and friends.
When the snow fell and the slopes opened, Dave was just as much in his element. He loved to ski and made sure his kids did too, patiently teaching each of them on the mountain and passing along a love of the sport that became a shared family joy for years to come.
For more than thirty years, Dave devoted himself to a career at UPS, showing up with the same quiet reliability that defined everything he did. He was the kind of man you could count on — at work, at home, and everywhere in between. His colleagues knew it. His family lived it every day. To his wide circle of friends, he was simply “Tahoe Dave” — a name that captured both where he belonged and the kind of person he was: rooted, genuine, and always happy to see you.
Dave had a sense of humor that could light up a room, the quick wit of someone who never took himself too seriously but always knew how to make the people around him smile. Just as natural to him was his willingness to help — a friend or neighbor in need never had to ask twice. He was the first to show up and the last to leave, giving his time and effort freely and without keeping score.
Beyond work and the lake, Dave had a restless curiosity about the world. He loved to travel, to see new places alongside the people he loved, and to visit family whenever the chance arose. Those trips — the drives, the destinations, the time together —were among his most cherished.
Above all, Dave was a devoted family man in every sense of the word-the steadfast heart of a life well lived. He was a loving husband to Betsy, a proud father to their three South Lake Tahoe children, and a joyful grandfather to five grandchildren who lovingly called him Papa.
In his final years, Dave fought advanced prostate cancer with courage and grace. His family hopes his story encourages all men to be proactive about their health by discussing PSA screening with their doctors starting at age 45 — or earlier for those with a family history or risk factors. Early detection saves lives.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate team at Barton Hospice for their gentle care, guidance, and support during his final days.
He is survived by: His beloved wife, Betsy Sommerfeldt; his three children, Mike Sommerfeldt, Ericka Sommerfeldt, and Brian Sommerfeldt, all born and raised in South Lake Tahoe; five cherished grandchildren who brought him immeasurable joy; two beloved nieces; and his faithful companion and “best girl,” Gracie, his beloved Labrador, who was by his side through it all.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.
Dave Sommerfeldt lived a life of loyalty, love, and quiet strength.
He will be deeply missed and long remembered
by all whose lives he touched.
“What a difference a Dave makes”
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
