LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – The Tahoe Transportation District, in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, will open the new Chimney Beach parking lot to the public as part of the State Route 28 Corridor Management Improvements project. The lot will provide approximately 130 parking spaces to improve safety, reduce roadside parking, and support managed access along Lake Tahoe’s East Shore.

Motorists are advised that the project also includes a new signalized pedestrian crosswalk on State Route 28 between the parking area and the trailhead. Drivers should expect intermittent stops and use caution for pedestrians crossing SR28 between the parking lot and trail access areas.

The parking lot located at Chimney Beach on SR28 opens on Friday, May 22, 2026.

Paid parking will begin June 1 at a daily rate of $12 between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.. Overnight parking will not be permitted between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Parking revenue will be reinvested into operations and continued improvements within the SR 28 corridor, including construction of restroom facilities at Chimney Beach parking.

The project is a partnership between the Tahoe Transportation District, USDA Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).

Additional updates and site improvements are forthcoming.
