DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. – The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) is joining law enforcement agencies across Nevada and the nation in the annual Click It or Ticket campaign, reminding drivers and passengers to buckle up during the busy Memorial Day travel period through May 31.
“Wearing your seat belt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself and your passengers,” said Sheriff Dan Coverley. “As more people travel throughout Memorial Day weekend and the days ahead, our deputies will be actively enforcing seat belt laws to help keep everyone safe on our roadways. Taking a few seconds to buckle up can save your life.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 9,758 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants were killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. Law enforcement agencies participating in the Click It or Ticket campaign will take a no-excuses approach to seat belt enforcement, day and night.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers and passengers to wear seat belts properly at all times:
- Place the shoulder belt across the middle of the chest and away from the neck.
- Lay the lap belt across the hips and not the stomach.
- Never place the seat belt behind the back or under the arms.
Nighttime enforcement remains a focus of the campaign, as crash data shows a higher number of unrestrained fatalities occur during evening and overnight hours.
“Seat belts save lives every day,” Coverley said. “Whether you’re driving across town or traveling out of state this holiday weekend, make buckling up part of every trip.”
