SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Pioneer Trail understory burn scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been canceled due to a decision by Forest Service leadership to suspend all prescribed fire burning nationally on all National Forest lands. If a new date is determined, the public will be informed.
The Forest Service wants to ensure adequate resources are available to support wildfire suppression needs. Nationally, conditions are trending hotter and drier, with the Forest Service currently managing multiple large fires.
The National Multi-Agency Coordination Group, composed of wildland fire representatives from each wildland fire agency based at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, establishes preparedness levels throughout the year to ensure suppression resource availability for emerging incidents across the country. They determine preparedness levels (PL) by evaluating fuel and weather conditions, fire activity, and fire suppression resource availability throughout the country.
The current PL is 3 out of their scale of 5.
You can help by doing your part to prevent wildfires by being aware of local burn and campfire restrictions, ensuring proper maintenance of equipment and vehicles that could spark fires and being mindful of fire safety.
Remember to protect and enjoy our national forests while out recreating this holiday weekend!
