KINGS BEACH, Calif. – With the arrival of the Memorial Day holiday weekend and unofficial start of summer, the environmental nonprofit Keep Tahoe Blue is inviting residents and vacationers to join a volunteer beach cleanup at Kings Beach State Recreation Area on the morning of Tuesday, May 26.
The event is an opportunity for anyone who loves Tahoe to give back by beautifying the beach, cleaning the shoreline and surrounding area, and demonstrating the environmental stewardship actions that everyone should take while at the Lake.
The May 26 cleanup is also the seasonal kickoff of Keep Tahoe Blue’s Tahoe Blue Beach program, a first-of-its-kind beach management initiative that brings together land managers, businesses, and the community to make responsible, Lake-friendly recreation the easy and obvious choice for all beachgoers. The Tahoe Blue Beach program helps recreation be more sustainable and leave fewer impacts by making simple changes — like improvements to signage, trash and bathroom facilities, and wayfinding at beaches around the Lake.
“A big part of enjoying Lake Tahoe is doing your part to leave it better than you found it,” said Keep Tahoe Blue’s Sustainable Recreation Manager Marilee Movius. “When we all prevent and pick up litter, respect beach rules, and embrace Tahoe’s slower pace, we will keep this place swimmable, hikeable, and beautiful.”
This summer, the program will focus on installing new and clearer signage, conducting more volunteer-led cleanups, supporting the shift to plastic-free concessions, and creating special operations plans for the busiest summer weekends. Kings Beach, Zephyr Cove Resort, Tahoe Beach Club, Meeks Bay Resort, and Camp Richardson Resort are all part of the program.
Tahoe Blue Beach activities will continue throughout the summer. Learn more about the program through a video and interactive StoryMap at keeptahoeblue.org/blue-beach.

About the Tahoe Blue Beach Program:
The Tahoe Blue Beach program brings together land managers, businesses, concessionaires, and innovative technology to make Lake-friendly recreation the easy and obvious choice for everyone who visits the beach. After the Tahoe Blue Beach pilot program launched at Zephyr Cove during the 2024 July 4th holiday, volunteers collected 97% less litter at Keep Tahoe Blue’s July 5 Keep Tahoe Red, White and Blue Beach Cleanup compared to the year before. That success supported the program’s expansion in 2025 to Tahoe Beach Club, Kings Beach, Camp Richardson Resort, and Meeks Bay Resort. Simple changes like managed parking, added staffing, visible signage, more trash receptacles and restrooms are helping create cleaner, safer, and bluer beaches across Tahoe. The program is scalable and flexible, depending on what is needed most at each site.
