SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – South Lake Tahoe will soon have a painted crosswalk that represents diversity, inclusion, and equality when a Pride flag will be painted near the South Tahoe Bikeway Path.

Council evaluated a few different locations:

1. The U.S. 50 and Lakeview Ave. – West leg crossing on Lakeview. This intersection is within Caltrans jurisdiction and an Encroachment Permit and approval from Caltrans would be required.
2. Ski Run Boulevard at Tamarack Ave – East leg crossing Ski Run Blvd. This
intersection may require an upgrade to the ADA ramps and would have to be evaluated.
3. Harrison Street at San Francisco Ave – West leg crossing Harrison St.
4. South Tahoe Bikeway Path – Lakefront between 3351 Lake Tahoe Blvd and
Fremont Ave. At this location, there are three segments of pedestrian markings on driveways.

Staff recommended, and the Council agreed, that the bikeway path would be the easiest and quickest to accomplish in time for Pride Month which is currently underway.

Council also said they want to explore the possibility of having more locations for other painted crosswalks to commemorate other groups, events, or art displays.

There was one speaker at the meeting who spoke against a Pride crosswalk as she didn’t see the need for a special crosswalk for the LBGTQ+ community while not having one for other groups such as veterans.

Other locations can be examined for future crosswalks with different themes.

There was no vote as this agenda item for the City Council was for guidance to staff.
