SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 invites the community and visitors to join them at their Flag Day Ceremony to properly dispose of American flags that are no longer serviceable on Saturday, June 14 at 11 a.m.

The American Legion is located at 2748 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

Many Americans proudly fly a flag at their homes and offices, but what do you do with them when they’re old and tattered? One doesn’t just throw it away in the trash, as that is considered disrespectful. Just as there is etiquette for properly displaying the flag, there is also etiquette for properly disposing of it.

Flag Day is held annually on June 14. This date commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by resolution, passed on June 14, 1777. The resolution passed that day stated: “Resolved, That the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Organizations like the American Legion use Flag Day as a date to hold flag disposal ceremonies. Flags may be dropped off at the Legion Hall at any time. If they are closed, place the flag inside a bag and drop it off at the front door.

June 14 is also the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army. The Legion asks that the public help them in recognizing past and present members of the Army.
