Former South Lake Tahoe City Manager David Jinkens is headed south to the city of Avalon to take on the same position for that city on Santa Catalina Island, one that he held in the 1980s.
Jinkens was the SLT City Manager from August 2002 until August 2010 when he retired after 35 year of service as a City CEO. Now, he’s headed back to where he and wife Terri lived and worked when they were first married.
“Terri and I look forward to returning to Avalon, a place where we lived and worked when we were first married,” Jinkens said. “Avalon has been and remains a very special place for us. I also look forward to returning to city management in Avalon and working with a City Council and community that can and will work together for the benefit of all to ensure a prosperous future and quality living environment. We have made many wonderful friends in South Lake Tahoe, and we intend to stay in contact with them and remain interested in the future of South Lake Tahoe.“
Since retiring at the lake, Jinkens has served as South Lake Tahoe Rotary President, been on the Board of Directors for the South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, and has done advocacy work for local businesses and residents, as well as staying active and involved in local and statewide public policy matters.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree from U.C. Berkeley and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from UCLA. He also earned a certificate from University of Virginia’s Senior Executive Institute.
Avalon was incorporated in 1913 and welcomes over 1.5 million visitors per year. It is known for its wildlife, dive sites and Mt. Orizaba, its highest peak. As the only California city on an island off of the coast, Avalon is a prime tourist attraction with its historic look and friendly demeanor. It is located 22 miles off the California coast. Catalina Island has an area of 74.98 square miles, most of which is in a dedicated open space managed by a Conservancy.
Jinkens expects to start his new job mid-July.
