SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Resistance Alliance will be holding a weekend full of activities as part of the “Good Trouble Lives On Weekend of Action” July 17-19. Events will be taking place across the country (see more here).
They will be holding peaceful events for what they say is a current threat to democracy and to protest the current state of politics in Washington, because “this is not politics as usual.”
“This is a fight for the survival of our democracy,: said local organizer Amy Machin-Ward. “Across the country, voting rights are being attacked, voices are being silenced, and the foundations of our republic are being tested. The ballot box is where the promise of America lives. If that promise is weakened, then the light of democracy grows dimmer for all of us. Inspired by the legacy of John Lewis, we choose ‘good trouble’. We choose courage over fear, action over silence, and hope over surrender.”
The Democracy is Brewing event on Friday, July 17, at Three Pines Coffee from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and at Paddle House Brews from 4 to 6 pm are designed to be a social and networking opportunity for individuals and organizations who share our belief in this cause. You can sign up to join the Visibility Brigade for the Rally and help them brainstorm “good trouble” actions beyond the weekend. They are planning to make this a standing gathering each month!!
The GTLO Rally at Lakeview on Saturday, July 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. will provide folks an opportunity to get into some “Good Trouble” while protesting. There will be a voting status check and an online registration booth sponsored by the Young Democrats Committee at LTCC. There will be several activities for people to engage their passionate side while respecting the non-violent requirements for the Good Trouble Lives On Movement. Activities will include: Sidewalk chalk protest art, sand resistance art, human-formed messages, Resistance Music and good old-fashioned protesting on both sides of Highway 50. A Safety Team will be in place to maintain a peaceful environment for all. Attendees are encouraged to take photos of these activities and submit them to us at 5050tahoe@gmail.com for publication in our first monthly Bulletin coming out on August 1st. On Sunday, July 19th – several faith-based gatherings within the Basin will be utilizing the Good Trouble Lives On “PREACH” guidelines to inform, educate and inspire their congregations with a non-partisan message about the importance of protecting the right to vote for everyone, the morality of resisting a government that threatens our civil rights, and the need to register every eligible voter possible to give the voice of the people back to them. Unity at the Lake of South Lake Tahoe is planning a service at 10:00 am.
Organizers said their goal is clear: to stand together, raise our voices responsibly, and demonstrate that the Tahoe Basin community supports democracy, accountability, and civic participation.
Commitment to Non-violence:
- This is a peaceful demonstration.
- We expect all participants to act lawfully and respectfully.
- We do not engage in or condone violence, property destruction, or confrontation.
- Participants are expected to de-escalate conflict and maintain a safe environment for families and community members.
- Weapons of any kind are not permitted.
- We are gathering to uplift democratic values — not to create harm or division.
