SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – If you’ve traveled on Pioneer Trail recently, you may have noticed that work has begun around the road’s intersection with Sonora and Willow streets.

Pioneer Trail Pedestrian Project – Phase II includes modifications to this intersection, and the street’s access to Pioneer Trail will be removed. Willow and Sonora will still be connected, so there won’t be a dead end. It has always been an odd angle with Pioneer, and in its place will be a new bus shelter, sidewalks, landscaping, and a walkway from the Sonora/Willow area to Pioneer Trail.

The rest of the project area on Pioneer Trail between Ski Run Blvd. and Larch Avenue will include sidewalks, bike lanes, new paving, landscaping, lighting and stormwater infrastructure.

The estimated cost of the total project is $6,149,000. Partners include the City of South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, California Department of Transportation and U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Funding comes from FHWA grants, Active Transportation Grants, and the City’s General Fund.

This segment of Pioneer follows Phase I from US50 to Larch Avenue, which was completed in 2013/14.

Project area in South Lake Tahoe.
