ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin a several-year project on State Route 4 on August 2 to improve the pavement condition, culvert drainage systems, visibility of the roadside signs, and roadside safety devices.

Originally planned for earlier in the season, Caltrans District 10 delayed the start date by working with Alpine County communities so construction would not impact peak summer activities in the region.

The work will be on State Route 4, and a maintenance vehicle pullout area will be constructed on SR 89 just north of its SR4 intersection.

Work will require one-way traffic control and periodic full highway closures, which will be posted to alert travelers of scheduled closures.

The existing pavement has minor cracks on the surface, settlement, and crumbled edges. In addition, there is a need to address deteriorating culvert drainage systems, update nonstandard guardrail systems and nonstandard ground-mounted road signs, and ensure the safety of maintenance workers.
