SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Camp Richardson Resort added some beach cabanas this week, prompting safety concerns and complaints of blocked views. The cabanas blocked the beach view of the lake along a popular stretch of sand, according to those who frequent the area.

The land and beach where the resort is located is public land under the U.S. Forest Service, and the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) issues concessionaire agreements for the hotel, cabins, and restaurant.  ExplorUS assumed operations in January 2024, and the property has been undergoing renovations since.

LTBMU said they have been working with their partner at Camp Richardson Resort to evaluate the beach cabanas.

“While the Resort is authorized to rent umbrellas, chairs, and other items to better serve the public’s beach experience, we have guided the Resort to remove the beach cabanas while a specific review of this use is conducted by FS staff,” said Daniel Cressy, LTBMU public services staff officer.
