LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. –  The Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) will present its next public lecture on Friday, August 15 with the topic of protecting California’s forests and commnitie in a fire-prone future. Wildfire is reshaping the landscapes of California, and our understanding of how forests function and recover is more urgent than ever. Dr. Andrew Latimer and collaborating UC Davis researchers are using advanced data science, remote sensing, and ecological modeling together with field work in burned landscapes to study fire impacts and forest resilience. This talk explores how well fuels treatments, prescribed fire, and lower-intensity wildfire can protect forests. Dr. Latimer will further dive into post-fire tree regeneration to explore forest resilience to intense wildfire.

Through cutting-edge research on how climate change and land use are altering fire regimes, the work highlights the critical factors that influence where and how intensely wildfires burn—and what comes next. From modeling fuel accumulation to forecasting regeneration success, this science provides insights for forest management, conservation planning, and climate adaptation.

Join TERC for a compelling look at how the latest UC Davis data-driven research is helping to protect California’s forests, communities, and biodiversity in a fire-prone future. Immediately prior to the lecture, the public is invited to a cocktail reception and poster presentations by their 2025 summer interns, who will discuss the research projects they have undertaken at Tahoe this summer.
