LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Even though they are not common, rattlesnakes have been reported on the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) this summer. According to a social media post, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association said they have had several rattlesnake sightings.
“While encounters are usually rare and snakes prefer to avoid people, it’s important to stay alert and prepared,” said the TRT.
Rattlesnakes can be found at elevations as high as 11,000 feet though they are more common at lower elevations. Throughout its 165-mile loop, the TRT ranges in elevations from a low of 6,200 feet to a high of 10,338 feet.
Tips for staying safe on the trail:
- Stay on designated trails where visibility is higher.
- Watch where you step or place your hands—especially near rocks, logs, or tall grass.
- Keep pets leashed and close to you.
- Give rattlesnakes plenty of space if you see one—do not try to move or disturb them.
- If you hear the rattle, stop, locate the snake, and back away slowly.
Remember: rattlesnakes play an important role in our ecosystem, helping control rodent populations. Respecting their space keeps both you and them safe.
