A storm passed through South Lake Tahoe early Tuesday evening bringing gusty winds, rain and dropping penny-size hail. Many streets through the town were flooded, including a large section of Highway 50.
The National Weather Service in Reno said the storm brought torrential rain and wind gusts of 45 mph.
This storm caught many by surprise as bicyclists, walkers and joggers were seen on the sides of the road huddled under eaves, waiting for it to pass. The Bijou Safeway was eerily quiet and empty at 5:30 pm Tuesday, a time when the store is usually packed. Shoppers couldn’t make it across the flooded parking lot with over 6 inches of standing water, or they preferred to stay inside their cars waiting for the hail to stop.
