SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Sierra Nevada Alliance invites the community to celebrate the start of Latino Conservation Week: Disfrutando y Conservando
Nuestra Tierra with Sembrando el Futuro – Seeding the Future, a free, bilingual, family-friendly gathering on Saturday, September 12 in South Lake Tahoe, starting at 9 a.m.
The event will bring together environmental education, cultural traditions, and hands-on learning as participants explore how healthy soil, native plants, pollinators, and sustainable gardening practices can help both people and the environment thrive. Participants will get their hands dirty while learning about composting, growing healthy vegetables, gardening with native plants, and creating pollinator-friendly spaces. The gathering will also include opportunities to connect with other community members, enjoy free tacos, and make an Ojo de Dios, a traditional craft from Jalisco, Mexico.
The event is part of the Sierra Nevada Alliance’s 2026 celebration of Latino Conservation Week, a national initiative of Hispanic Access Foundation that celebrates Latino communities’ connections to the outdoors while creating opportunities to participate in recreation, conservation, and stewardship. Sierra Nevada Alliance serves as the regional coordinator for Latino Conservation Week across the Sierra Nevada.
“Conservation is strongest when people can see themselves, their families and their cultural traditions reflected in how we care for the environment,” said Jenny Hatch, Executive Director of the Sierra Nevada Alliance. “Latino Conservation Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate the many ways Latino communities already care for land, water and one another while creating welcoming opportunities for more families to connect with the incredible natural places surrounding us.”
Sembrando el Futuro is designed around a simple idea: caring for a garden can also be a way of caring for a community. Participants will learn practical skills they can use at home while exploring the relationships between pollinators, plants, healthy soils, and people, and recognizing longstanding traditions of land stewardship and cultivation within Latino and Indigenous communities. The September 12 gathering follows a bilingual virtual workshop held September 1 and moves that conversation outdoors and into the soil.
