As we watched the horrific images out of the islands of the Caribbean after the one-two punch of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we saw people wading through waist-deep water to get to safety, with no homes or belongings to go back to.
Two of those residents who lost their home in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands are on a road trip and currently in Lake Tahoe. “We needed to get to nature,” Lissa Ress explained about how they ended up in the Sierra.
Lissa, her boyfriend and their two fostered island dogs took a fishing boat to Puerto Rico and caught the last flights out before Maria hit the island.
Now faced with being homeless, Lisa explained that she has to find a loving home for the two dogs they adopted, Frankie and Jack. They don’t know where they are going but know that their current life is not for dogs.
Frankie and Jack were found behind dumpsters in St. Thomas. Lissa and her boyfriend got them spayed/neutered and even sent them to training camp for three weeks prior to the hurricanes hitting.
“They are a bonded pair and very cute with one another so ideally we would like to find them a home together but open to adopting them out individually,” explained Lissa.
They survived hurricane Irma, evacuated St Thomas on a boat to Puerto Rico and are now in California.
“As much as we love these dogs, our home in St Thomas got destroyed and we are currently homeless,” said Lisa Ress. “We are looking for a special loving active family to adopt our babies.”
