Hello to all of you who support the incredible talent that is here on the South Shore! But if you’ve yet to attend a show at the historic Valhalla Boathouse Theatre, now is the perfect chance. There are four more performances of “Proof,” a Broadway play from 2001 that won the Pulitzer Prize, as well as the Tony for Best Drama, plus many more awards.
I was not familiar with this production, nor were any of my eight friends that I brought with me to Sunday evening’s show. To say we were all blown away after the first scene ended is an understatement. And it just got better and better, more intense, crazy, sad, romantic, shocking. Math and mental illness are the prevailing characters alongside the human actors on stage. I never thought to bring out my notebook and pen; that is how engrossed I was from the first line spoken. And oh my, the dialogue of these four verbose characters. I continually marvel at the special talent that actors have to memorize their lines.
Since I didn’t take notes, I asked my fellow audience members to text me their thoughts and impressions from this incredible performance as soon as they got home.
From Rachael Sweeten, sitting in her car at 10 p.m.: “This starry night, watching a play about Math in the beautiful Valhalla Boathouse Theatre, seems like an ideal time to consider whether it is more important to solve problems…or to solve problems together!”
From Kathy Dewey the next day: “A couple of thoughts on the play…it was such a range of emotions, sadness, anger, romance, frustration, comedy…and the actors all portrayed their characters with such talent and honesty. It felt like you really were experiencing their lives in real time. Each actor had such a range of emotions to portray and rose to the challenge perfectly.”
From Bridgette Gangitano:
- 100% captivated
- Reminiscent of twists in the Alfred Hitchcock Presents Series
- Outstanding performances
- The storyline was refreshing, and I want more like it.
This week’s final performances are on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. The door opens half an hour before showtime, and there are no assigned seats.
